Configuring Basic MLD Functions

To enable receiver hosts to join an IPv6 multicast network and receive multicast data, you must configure basic MLD functions on the switch interface connected to the receiver hosts.

Optimizing MLD Performance

After basic MLD functions are configured on the multicast switch, the switch can exchange MLD messages with member hosts to maintain group membership with the default configurations. You can optimize MLD performance on the switch according to network security and performance optimization requirements.

Configuring MLD SSM Mapping

The SSM model allows MLDv2 hosts to specify the multicast sources from which they want to receive data. In some cases, receiver hosts can run only MLDv1. To allow these hosts to use SSM, configure MLD SSM mapping on the switch to provide the SSM service for MLDv1 receiver hosts.

Configuring MLD Limit

As defined in the MLD protocol, group members can join or leave a multicast group anytime, anywhere, and the number of group memberships is not limited. When many users watch multiple programs simultaneously, a lot of bandwidth on the multicast device is consumed, leading to degradation of device performance. To prevent this problem, you can configure MLD limit on the switch to limit the number of multicast groups on an interface or in the system. This ensures that users watch clear, stable programs.
