Using MPing to Check Multicast Service Performance

Context

Multicast devices need to support not only multicast forwarding and multicast routing protocols but also multicast diagnostic tools.

Multicast ping (MPing) is a diagnostic tool that can be used to:

  • Ping a common group address.
  • Check the multicast routing table on the switch to determine the protocol operating status and the establishment of the multicast distribution tree.
  • Collect statistics on received Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) Echo Reply packets from the destination host and calculate the TTL and response time from the ping initiator to the group member.
  • Calculate the network delay and route jitter by performing MPing tests continuously.
  • Ping a reserved group address to check reserved group members on the network.

Procedure

  1. Run the ping multicast [ -c count | -h ttl-value | -i interface-type interface-number | -m time | -p pattern | -q | -s packetsize | -t timeout | -tos tos-value | -v ] * host command to monitor multicast service performance.

    By specifying a reserved group address, you can check whether the switch interface connected to the specified interface is running the corresponding protocol and has joined the reserved group.

    NOTE:

    When the destination address is a reserved group address, you must specify the parameter -i. When the destination is not a reserved group address, you cannot specify the parameter -i.
