Networking Requirements

As shown in Figure 5-14, the bearer network is a Layer 3 network, on which wireless services between NodeBs are transmitted. All devices on the bearer network support PTP. PE1 and PE2 receive clock signals from two different BITS servers to back up each other. When one BITS server fails, clock synchronization on the bearer network is not affected. NodeB2 does not support PTP but supports synchronous Ethernet for frequency synchronization. NodeB1 and NodeB3 support PTP.

Configure PTP on the bearer network to implement frequency synchronization between NodeBs and bearer network devices. This configuration allows PTP-supporting NodeBs to synchronize with bearer network devices.

Configuration Roadmap

The configuration roadmap is as follows:

  1. Configure a routing protocol to ensure that devices can communicate with each other.

  2. Configure PE1 and PE2 to receive BITS clock signals through BITS interfaces.
  3. Configure the type of devices on the bearer network as BC and configure NodeB2 that does not support PTP to transmit frequency signals through synchronous Ethernet.
  4. Configure PE1 and PE2 as system master clocks and connect them to BITS clocks. PE1 and PE2 back up each other.

  5. Configure unicast UDP encapsulation for PTP messages and set the delay measurement mechanism to Pdelay because IP addresses of interfaces are known.

Procedure

  1. Configure IP addresses for interfaces to enable devices to communicate.
  2. Configure PE1 and PE2 to receive BITS clock signals through BITS interfaces.

    For configuration details, see Example for Configuring the BITS as the Master Clock Source of PTP.

  3. Enable PTP globally on PE1 and configure PE1 as a BC.
