Configuring Interface Split and Merge

Context

100GE optical interfaces and some 40GE optical interfaces can be used as independent interfaces or each can be split into multiple independent interfaces. A 40GE interface can be split into four 10GE interfaces. A 100GE interface can be split into ten 10GE interfaces, two 40GE interfaces or four 10GE interfaces. With the interface split function, interfaces on a card can connect to various types of interfaces on the remote device.

After an interface is split, the original interface does not work. The new 10GE or 40GE optical interfaces support the same configurations and features as common optical interfaces, except that they are numbered in a different way. For details about the numbering rule, see Interface Numbering Rules. Table 2-4 lists connection modes for split 40GE interfaces.

1-to-4 high-speed cable (or copper cable)

The cable provides fixed optical modules that can be directly installed on optical interfaces, lowering costs. The cable length is fixed and the maximum length is 5 m.

1-to-4 high-speed cable models: QSFP-40G-CU1M, QSFP-40G-CU3M, and QSFP-40G-CU5M

1-to-4 active optical cable (AOC)

The cable provides fixed optical modules that can be directly installed on optical interfaces, lowering costs. The cable length is fixed and the maximum length is 10 m.

1-to-4 AOC model: QSFP-4SFP10-AOC10M

1-to-4 40GE optical module + common 10GE optical module + optical fiber

The local and remote interfaces can have a 1-to-4 40GE optical module and four common 10GE optical modules installed respectively and be connected using a dedicated 1-to-4 optical fiber. The communication distance can be adjusted. The optical fibers do not provide optical modules and the costs are high.

1-to-4 40GE optical module models: QSFP-40G-iSR4, QSFP-40G-eSR4, and QSFP-40G-iSM4

1-to-4 optical fiber model: MPO-4*DLC

Common 40GE optical module + optical fiber

If the local and remote interfaces are both split 40GE interfaces, they can have the same 40GE QSFP+ optical modules installed and be connected using an optical fiber.

As shown in Figure 2-10, Figure 2-11 and Figure 2-12, a split 100GE interface is connected to ten 10GE, two 40GE interfaces or four 10GE on the remote device using a 1-to-10, 1-to-2 or 1-to-4 cable. For details about the 1-to-10, 1-to-2 or 1-to-4 cable, see "Cables - High-Speed Cable" in the S12700 Series Agile Switches Hardware Description.

NOTE:
  • On the S12700, only the EE series, ET1D2L08QSC0, EH1D2L08QX2E, ET1D2C04HX2E, ET1D2C04HX2H, ET1D2C04HX2S, ET1D2H02QX2E, ET1D2H02QX2S, and ET1D2L02QSC cards support interface split and merge. A 100GE interface on the ET1D2C04HX2E, ET1D2C04HX2H, ET1D2C04HX2S, ET1D2H02QX2E, or ET1D2H02QX2S card only can be split into four 10GE interfaces. A 100GE interface on the EE series cards can be split into ten 10GE interfaces or two 40GE interfaces.
  • After configuring interface split or merge, save the configuration and restart the card to make the configuration take effect.

If interface split or merge is configured on an interface, the original configuration on the interface is lost. Therefore, exercise caution when deciding to perform the interface split or merge operation.

Procedure

  • Configuring Interface Split

    • Splitting a 40GE interface into four 10GE interfaces

      1. Run:

        system-view

        The system view is displayed.

      2. Run:

        interface 40ge interface-number

        The 40GE interface view is displayed.

      3. Run:

        port split split-type 40GE:4*XGE

        The 40GE interface is split into four 10GE interfaces.

        By default, a 40GE interface is used as an independent interface.

    • Splitting a 100GE interface into ten 10GE, two 40GE or four 10GE interfaces

      1. Run:

        system-view

        The system view is displayed.

      2. Run:

        interface 100ge interface-number

        The 100GE interface view is displayed.

      3. Run:

        port split split-type { 100GE:10*XGE | 100GE:2*40GE | 100GE:4*XGE }

        The 100GE interface is split into ten 10GE, two 40GE or four 10GE interfaces.

        By default, a 100GE interface is used as an independent interface.

  • Configuring Interface Merge

    • Merging four converted 10GE interfaces into a 40GE interface

      1. Run:

        system-view

        The system view is displayed.

      2. Run:

        interface xgigabitethernet interface-number

        The view of a converted 10GE interface is displayed.

      3. Run:

        undo port split

        The four converted 10GE interfaces are merged into a 40GE interface.

        To merge converted interfaces, you only need to run this command in the view of one converted interface.

    • Merging ten converted 10GE, two converted 40GE or four converted 10GE interfaces into a 100GE interface

      1. Run:

        system-view

        The system view is displayed.

      2. Run:

        interface xgigabitethernet interface-number or interface 40ge interface-number

        The view of a converted 10GE or 40GE interface is displayed.

      3. Run:

        undo port split

        The ten converted 10GE, two converted 40GE or four converted 10GE interfaces are merged into a 100GE interface.

        To merge converted interfaces, you only need to run this command in the view of one converted interface.

Checking the Configuration

Run the display port split [ slot slot-id ] command to view interface split information.
