Replacing a Fan Module in the Main Control Board Enclosure

Replacing a Fan Module in the Main Control Board Enclosure

This section describes how to replace a fan module in the P36/C36 main control board enclosure.

Impact on the System

The P36/C36 must be powered off before replacement of a fan module. Therefore, the services running on the P36/C36 will be affected. Perform this operation with caution.

Prerequisites

  • A new fan module is available.
  • The faulty fan is located.
  • The fan module is in the middle of the main control board enclosure. You need to remove the main control board enclosure first.

Precaution

  • Only professional technical engineers are allowed to replace fans.
  • Each P36/C36 has two power supplies. Ensure that both power supplies are disconnected.

Tools and Materials

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • ESD gloves
  • ESD wrist strap
  • ESD bag
  • Scissors
  • Tie (used to bind cables of the fan)
  • Labels

Procedure

  1. Wear the ESD wrist strap or gloves. For details, see Wearing an ESD Wrist Strap in Replacing a Main Control Board Enclosure.
  2. Use KVM to log in to the OS as user root (default password is Root@storage), then run poweroff to poweroff the node and wait for the shutdown to complete.

Wait for the KVM screen to have no output, indicates that the shutdown has been completed.

  3. Label the cables on the P36/C36 and disconnect the P36/C36 from the power sockets and other devices. Execute the shutdown command through the operating system to power off the P36/C36. Disconnect the power socket from other devices.
  4. Remove the main control board enclosure.

    1. Press the buttons on the two handles at the rear of the P36/C36 chassis, as shown in step 1 in Figure 6-10.
    2. Release the two handles and push them down, as shown in step 2 in Figure 6-10.
    3. The main control board enclosure slides out when you push the two handles down, as shown in step 3 in Figure 6-10. Take out the main control board enclosure and place it on a clean ESD platform.

  5. Open the main control board enclosure top cover.

    1. Loosen the screw in the top cover counterclockwise, as shown in step 1 in Figure 6-11.
    2. Remove the main control board enclosure top cover, as shown in step 2 in Figure 6-11.

  6. Take out the fan module.

    NOTE:
The P36/C36 fan module must be replaced as a whole.
    1. Take out the ultracapacitor.
      1. Open the battery box on the air deflector.
      2. Take out the ultracapacitor in the battery case.
      3. Separate the ultracapacitor and air deflector along the cable rail of the air deflector.
    2. Lift the air hood and remove it from the chassis, as shown in step 1 in Figure 6-12.
    3. Loosen the two screws that fasten the fan module to the main control board enclosure, as shown in step 2 in Figure 6-12.
    4. Remove the five cables between the fan module and mainboard.
    5. Take out the fan module, as shown in step 3 in Figure 6-12.

  7. Put the removed fan module in an ESD bag.
  8. Take the fan module to be installed out of the ESD bag.
  9. Install the fan module.
    1. As shown in step 1 in Figure 6-13, install the fan module vertically downwards.
    2. As shown in step 2 in Figure 6-13, fasten the two screws that fix the fan module to the main control board enclosure.
    3. Connect the five cables between the fan module and main board.
    4. As shown in step 3 in Figure 6-13, install the air hood downwards.

    5. Secure the ultracapacitor. a. Secure the cable of the ultracapacitor along the air deflector's rail. b. Put the ultracapacitor into the air deflector's battery case and secure it. c. Put on the battery case cover.
  10. Install the main control board enclosure top cover.

    1. Push the top cover in place, as shown in step 1 in Figure 6-14.
    2. Fasten the screw to fix the top cover clockwise, as shown in step 2 in Figure 6-14.

  11. Install the main control board enclosure.

    1. Push the main control board enclosure into the chassis, as shown in step 1 in Figure 6-15.
    2. Hold the two handles on the main control board enclosure and push the main control board enclosure in place, as shown in step 2 in Figure 6-15. Close the two handles.

  12. According to the labels, connect the P36/C36 to the power socket and other devices. Then power on the P36/C36.
  13. Log in to the device management software. Choose Device Management > Device Info and check the fan status, as shown in Figure 6-16.

    • If the status is Normal, the installation is successful.
    • If the status is Fault, the new fan module may be incorrectly installed. Remove and reinstall the fan module.

    NOTE:
Fan modules 1 to 5 are fans of the main control board enclosure and fan modules 6 to 11 are internal fans of the chassis.

Follow-up Procedure

After replacing the fan, label the removed fan module for subsequent handling.
