Replacing a System Disk Backplane

A system disk backplane provides power and data transmission channels for disks.

Impact on the System

Before replacing a backplane, you must power off the P36E or C36E node. This will adversely affect the services running on the node. Exercise caution when performing this operation.

Prerequisites

The replacement system disk backplane is ready.

Precaution

  • Only professional technical support engineers are allowed to replace a backplane.
  • A P36E or C36E node has two power modules. Ensure that both are disconnected.
  • To prevent personal injury, arrange two persons to replace it.

Tools and Materials

  • Flat-head screwdrivers
  • Phillips screwdrivers
  • Electrostatic discharge (ESD) gloves
  • ESD wrist straps
  • ESD bags
  • Labels

Procedure

  1. Wear an ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves.
  2. Use the KVM to log in to the operating system of the node, enter user name root and its password (default: Root@storage), and run poweroff command to power off the node.

    Wait until the KVM has no output. The power-off is complete.

  3. Remove all power cables and external signal cables.
  4. Remove the storage node from the cabinet.
    1. Loosen the captive screws on the panel using a Phillips screwdriver, as shown in step 1 in Figure 3-49.

    2. Slowly pull the storage node out along the guide rails, as shown in step 2 in Figure 3-49.
    3. Press the release buttons on both sides and pull the storage node out of the cabinet along the guide rails, as shown in step 3 in Figure 3-49.
  5. Remove the enclosure cover.
    1. Use a flat-head screwdriver to loosen the latch that secures the ejector lever of the enclosure cover, as shown in step 1 in Figure 3-50.
    2. Open the ejector lever to push the enclosure cover backward, as shown in step 2 in Figure 3-50.

  6. Disconnect cables from the system disk backplane.
  7. Unscrew the system disk module and lift it up vertically, as shown in Figure 3-51.

  8. Remove the disk module. For details, see 2 in Replacing a Service Disk Module.

    Correctly record the mapping between the disk modules and slots. Ensure that disk modules are inserted into the same slots before and after the removal. Otherwise, services may be affected.

  9. Unscrew the system disk backplane and remove the latch from the system disk backplane, remove the system disk backplane, as shown in steps 1 and 2 in Figure 3-52.

  10. Place the removed hard disk backplane in an ESD bag.
  11. Take the spare front hard disk backplane out of its ESD bag.
  12. Insert the disk backplane in the arrow direction until it does not move, and screw the backplane, install the latch from the system disk backplane, as shown in steps 1 and 2 in Figure 3-53.

  13. Install the disk module. For details, see 5 in Replacing a Service Disk Module.

    Ensure that disk modules are inserted into the same slots before and after the removal. Otherwise, services may be affected.

  14. Install the system disk module in the enclosure and screw the module, as shown in Figure 3-54.

  15. Connect cables for the system disk backplane.
  16. Install the enclosure cover.
    1. Place the enclosure cover horizontally, align it with the fixing slots on both side panels of the enclosure, and close the ejector lever, as shown in steps 1 and 2 in Figure 3-55.

    2. Tighten the latch to secure the ejector lever of the enclosure cover using flat-head screwdriver, as shown in step 3 in Figure 3-55.
  17. Put the storage node into the cabinet.
    1. Arrange at least four persons to lift the storage node on both sides, align the inner rails on the storage node with the holding rails, and push the storage node into the cabinet along the holding rails, as shown in Figure 3-56.

    2. Press the release buttons on both sides, and push the storage node into the cabinet until the storage node cannot move forward, as shown in Figure 3-57.

    3. Tighten the two captive screws on the mounting ears to secure the storage node, as shown in Figure 3-58.

  18. Connect the storage node to the power sockets and peripheral devices according to the cable connection labels. Then power on the storage node.
  19. Check whether the backplane is successfully replaced.

    • If the disks are powered on properly and the disk indicators are steady on, the backplane is successfully replaced.
    • If the disk indicators are off, the backplane fails to be replaced. Install it again or contact technical support.

  20. Inspect the system using SmartKit. Choose Home > Storage > Routine Maintenance > More > Inspection to check the system status. For details, see the OceanStor 9000 Routine Maintenance.

    • If all inspection items are successful: The inspection is successful.
    • If some inspection items fail the inspection: The inspection is failed. Rectify the faults by taking recommended actions in the inspection reports. You need to reperform inspection after rectifying. If the inspection is still failed, contact Huawei technical support.

Follow-up Procedure

After replacing the backplane, label the replaced backplane to facilitate subsequent operations.
