Replacing an Expansion Module

This section explains how to replace an expansion module of the C72.

Impact on the System

You must power off the C72 before replacing an expansion module. This interrupts the services running on the C72. Exercise caution when performing this operation.

Prerequisites

  • A replacement expansion enclosure is ready.
  • The expansion module that you want to replace has been located.

Precaution

  • To prevent damage to an expansion module, slowly pull out the enclosure from or slide the enclosure into the cabinet.
  • Use care when you remove and insert an expansion module to avoid any damage to the appearance or connectors of the expansion module.
  • During the replacement of an expansion module, ensure that the duration for which the enclosure stays in pull-out state is shorter than five minutes.
  • Wait at least 15 minutes before pulling out the enclosure again.
  • Pull out only one enclosure of the C72 at a time.
  • If the over-temperature alarm indicator of the C72 is on, immediately slide the enclosure into the cabinet regardless of whether the replacement is complete. Otherwise, system services may be affected.

Tools and Materials

  • ESD wrist strap
  • ESD bag
  • Labels

Procedure

  1. Wear an ESD wrist strap.
  2. Log in to the node through the serial port as user root (default password is Root@storage), then run poweroff to poweroff the node and wait for the shutdown to complete.

    Set Bits per second to 115200, Data bits to 8, Stop bits to 1, Parity to None, and Flow control to None.

    Wait for the serial screen to have no output, indicates that the shutdown has been completed.

    Need to perform this operation in two control modules.

  3. After marking the cable connection positions on the new control module, unplug cables from the control module to be replaced.
  4. Loosen the two screws on the front panel and slowly pull out the system enclosure, as shown in Figure 7-7.

  5. Press the latch on the expansion module and pull out the expansion module, as shown in Figure 7-8.

  6. Place the removed expansion module into an ESD bag.
  7. Take the replacement expansion module out of its ESD bag.
  8. Fully open the handle of the replacement expansion module, insert the module into the empty slot, and close the handle, as shown in Figure 7-9.

  9. After successfully installing the expansion module, slowly slide the system enclosure into the cabinet and fasten the two screws on the front panel, as shown in Figure 7-10.

  10. Connect cables for control module.
  11. Use a serial port to log in to the operating system as user root, and run the following script to initiate a node status self-check.

    cd /opt/product/deploy/script

    ./envcheck.py

    The normal self-check result is as follows:

  12. Check whether network ports on the storage node are named P0, P1, NIC0, NIC1, NIC2, and NIC3, respectively.
    1. Use a serial port to log in to the operating system as user root, and run ifconfig -a to check whether network ports on the storage node are named P0, P1, NIC0, NIC1, NIC2, and NIC3.

      • If yes, go to 13.
      • If no, go to 12.b.

    2. Run reboot to restart the storage node, so that new network adapters can be identified.
  13. Check the status of the storage node on the DeviceManager.
    1. Start the browser on the maintenance terminal and log in to the DeviceManager.
    2. In the Alarms area on the home page, check whether a new alarm is reported.

      • If yes, handle the alarm according to the alarm help.
      • If no, go to 13.c.

    3. Click Device View to go to the device view.
    4. In Nodes, check the status of the node that is newly added to the cluster.

      • Health Status: Normal
      • Running Status: Online

  14. Check the firmware version.
    1. Use a serial port to log in to the operating system as user root.
    2. Run the command cli_start -u admin to log in to the CLI. Enter the password of user admin when prompted.
    3. Run show node firmware_c72 to check whether the value of Matched is yes.

      • If yes, no action is required.
      • If no, run reboot. The firmware version will be upgraded automatically.

Follow-up Procedure

After replacing the expansion module, label it to facilitate subsequent operations.
