Replacing a Memory Module

This section explains how to replace a memory module for the P25.

Impact on the System

The P25 must be powered off before replacement of a memory module. Therefore, the services running on the P25 will be affected. Perform this operation with caution.

Prerequisites

  • A new memory module is available.
  • The faulty memory module is located.
  • The memory module is in the rear of the main control board enclosure. You need to remove the main control board enclosure top cover and air hood first.

Precaution

  • Only professional technical engineers are allowed to replace the memory module.
  • Each P25 has two power supplies. Make sure both supplies are disconnected.
  • The memory module fits in only one direction. Do not force a memory module into the socket to avoid damaging the memory module and the socket.
  • The type and capacity of new memory must be the same as the faulty memory.
  • Before replacing a memory module, record the system memory capacity for check and comparison after the replacement.
  • Follow different specific regulations when you insert different number of memory modules. The red box in Figure 5-22 shows the memory slot on the mainboard. Table 5-1 shows memory configuration and installation list.

Procedure

  1. Wear the ESD wrist strap or gloves. For details, see Wearing an ESD Wrist Strap in Replacing a Main Control Board Enclosure.
  2. Use KVM to log in to the OS as user root (default password is Root@storage), then run poweroff to poweroff the node and wait for the shutdown to complete.

    Wait for the KVM screen to have no output, indicates that the shutdown has been completed.

  3. Label the cables on the P25 and disconnect the P25 from the power sockets and other devices.
  4. Take out the main control board enclosure. For details, see 4 in Replacing a Fan Module.
  5. Remove the main control board enclosure top cover. For details, see 5 in Replacing a Fan Module.
  6. Pull out the air hood upward, see 6 in Replacing a Fan Module.
  7. As shown in step 1 in Figure 5-23, open the clips to loose the memory module.
  8. As shown in step 2 in Figure 5-23, pull out the memory module upward.

  9. Put the removed memory module into an ESD bag.
  10. Take the memory module to be installed out of the ESD bag.
  11. Align the memory module with the slot and insert the memory module into the slot, as shown in step 1 in Figure 5-24.
  12. Close the clips to lock the memory module, as shown in step 2 in Figure 5-24.

  13. Install the air hood.
  14. Install the main control board enclosure top cover. For details, see 10 in Replacing a Fan Module.
  15. Install the main control board enclosure into the chassis. For details, see 11 in Replacing a Fan Module.

    After hardware installation, if there are operations need to be performed using BIOS, for the initial startup, clear NVDIMM data using the BIOS. Otherwise, the operating system may fail to be started. Before connecting the power cable and powering on the storage node, connect the KVM cable, and then adjust the display content of the KVM to the port connected to the storage node.

  16. Connect the P25 with the power supply and other devices. Ensure that the cables are connected properly, and then power on the device.
  17. Clear NVDIMM data.
    1. During the system startup process, press Esc when the Press Esc for boot options message is displayed, choose SCU, input the BIOS password to enter the BIOS screen.

    2. Choose Security > Clear NvDimm Flash.

    3. In the Clear NvDimm Flash? dialog box, select Yes and press Enter.

    4. Wait 20 seconds. Check whether the displayed dialog box states "Clear NvDimm flash success. Please reboot system!"

      • If yes, go to 17.e.
      • If no, contact technical support.

    5. Press Enter and then F10. In the dialog box that is displayed, select Yes to save the configuration and restart the storage node.

  18. During the system startup, enter the BIOS to check the system memory capacity.

    During the system startup, when the information as shown in Figure 5-31 is displayed, press Esc, choose SCU when the window display as shown in Figure 5-32, input the BIOS password to enter the BIOS screen, then check the system memory capacity, as shown in Figure 5-33.

    NOTE:
    The capacity that is displayed in Total Memory is the sum of the NVDIMM memory capacity and common memory capacity.
    • If the memory capacity equals to the actual capacity, the installation is successful.
    • If the system memory capacity is smaller than the actual capacity, the memory module may be incorrectly installed. Remove and reinstall the memory module.

Follow-up Procedure

After replacing the memory module, label the removed memory module for subsequent handling.
