Replacing an NVDIMM Module

This section explains how to replace an NVDIMM module.

Impact on the System

The storage node must be powered off before replacement of an NVDIMM module. Therefore, the services running on the storage node will be affected. Perform this operation with caution.

Prerequisites

  • A new NVDIMM module is available.
    NOTE:

    The NVDIMM memory to be installed must be unused new devices.

  • The NVDIMM module is in the rear of the main control board enclosure. You need to remove the main control board enclosure top cover and air hood first.

Precaution

  • Use KVM to log in to the OS as user root (default password is Root@storage), then run poweroff to poweroff the node and wait for the shutdown to complete. Wait for the KVM screen to have no output, indicates that the shutdown has been completed. If the replacing operation is performed before shutdown the node, part of users' data could be damaged.
  • Only professional technical engineers are allowed to replace the NVDIMM module.
  • Each storage node has two power supplies. Make sure both supplies are disconnected.
  • When replacing an NVDIMM, you also need to replace its ultracapacitor.
  • Before the replacement, complete the cable connection between the NVDIMM module and its ultracapacitor.
  • The NVDIMM module fits in only one direction. Do not force an NVDIMM module into the socket to avoid damaging the NVDIMM module and the socket.
  • Before replacing an NVDIMM, record the system memory capacity for check and comparison after the replacement.
  • The red box in Figure 6-57 shows the NVDIMM module slot on the mainboard.

Tools and Materials

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • ESD gloves
  • ESD wrist strap
  • ESD bag
  • Labels

Procedure

  1. Use KVM to log in to the OS as user root (default password is Root@storage), then run poweroff to poweroff the node and wait for the shutdown to complete.

    Wait for the KVM screen to have no output, indicates that the shutdown has been completed.

  2. Wear the ESD wrist strap or gloves. For details, see Wearing an ESD Wrist Strap in Replacing a Main Control Board Enclosure.
  3. Label the cables on the storage node and disconnect the storage node from the power sockets and other devices.
  4. Take out the main control board enclosure. For details, see 4 in Replacing a Fan Module in the Main Control Board Enclosure.
  5. Remove the main control board enclosure top cover. For details, see 5 in Replacing a Fan Module in the Main Control Board Enclosure.
  6. Take out the ultracapacitor and air deflector.
    1. Open the battery box on the air deflector, as shown in step 1 in Figure 6-58.
    2. Take out the ultracapacitor in the battery case, as shown in step 2 in Figure 6-58.
    3. Separate the ultracapacitor and air deflector along the cable rail of the air deflector, as shown in step 3 in Figure 6-58.
    4. Take out the air deflector upward, as shown in step 4 in Figure 6-58.

  7. Open the clips to loose the NVDIMM module.
  8. Pull out the NVDIMM module upward.
  9. Put the removed NVDIMM module into an ESD bag.
  10. Take the NVDIMM module to be installed out of the ESD bag.
  11. Complete the cable connection between the NVDIMM module and its ultracapacitor.
  12. Align the NVDIMM module with the slot and insert the memory module into the slot.
  13. Close the clips to lock the NVDIMM module.
  14. Install the air deflector.
  15. Secure the ultracapacitor.
    1. Secure the cable of the ultracapacitor along the air deflector's rail, as shown in step 1 in Figure 6-59.
    2. Put the ultracapacitor into the air deflector's battery case and secure it, as shown in step 2 in Figure 6-59.
    3. Put on the battery case cover, as shown in step 3 in Figure 6-59.

  16. Install the main control board enclosure top cover. For details, see 10 in Replacing a Fan Module.
  17. Install the main control board enclosure into the chassis. For details, see 11 in Replacing a Fan Module.

    After hardware installation, if there are operations need to be performed using BIOS, for the initial startup, clear NVDIMM data using the BIOS. Otherwise, the operating system may fail to be started. Before connecting the power cable and powering on the storage node, connect the KVM cable, and then adjust the display content of the KVM to the port connected to the storage node.

  18. Connect the storage node with the power supply and other devices. Ensure that the cables are connected properly, and then power on the device.
  19. Clear NVDIMM data.
    1. During the system startup process, press Esc when the Press Esc for boot options message is displayed, choose SCU, input the BIOS password to enter the BIOS screen.

    2. Choose Security > Clear NvDimm Flash.

    3. In the Clear NvDimm Flash? dialog box, select Yes and press Enter.

    4. Wait 20 seconds. Check whether the displayed dialog box states "Clear NvDimm flash success. Please reboot system!"

      • If yes, go to 19.e.
      • If no, contact technical support.

    5. Press Enter and then F10. In the dialog box that is displayed, select Yes to save the configuration and restart the storage node.

  20. During the system startup, enter the BIOS to check the system memory capacity.

    During the system startup, when the information as shown in Figure 6-66 is displayed, press Esc, choose SCU when the window display as shown in Figure 6-67, input the BIOS password to enter the BIOS screen, then check the system memory capacity, as shown in Figure 6-68.

    NOTE:
    The capacity that is displayed in Total Memory is the sum of the NVDIMM memory capacity and common memory capacity.
    • If the memory capacity equals to the actual capacity, the installation is successful.
    • If the system memory capacity is smaller than the actual capacity, the memory module may be incorrectly installed. Remove and reinstall the memory module.

  21. Log in to DeviceManager to check if any alarm about NVDIMM exists.
  22. Run the script to check the status of the storage node.

    cd /opt/product/deploy/script

  23. Check whether the network ports of the storage node are named A0-0, A0-1, B3-0, and B3-1.
    1. Run ifconfig -a on the KVM to check whether the network ports of the storage node are named A0-0, A0-1, B3-0, and B3-1.

      • If yes, go to 24.
      • If no, go to 23.b.

    2. Run reboot to restart the storage node to identify the new network adapter.
  24. On the DeviceManager, view the node status.
    1. On the maintenance terminal, log in to the DeviceManager in a browser.
    2. In the Alarms area on the home page, check whether new alarms are generated.

      • If yes, handle the alarms by following the alarm help information.
      • If no, go to 24.c.

    3. Click Device View to go to the device view.
    4. In Nodes, view the status of the new storage node.

      • Health Status: Normal
      • Running Status: Online

Follow-up Procedure

After replacing the NVDIMM module, label the removed NVDIMM module for subsequent handling.
