Replacing a Fan Module

This section explains how to replace a fan module for a P12.

Impact on the System

You must power off the P12 before replacing a fan module. This interrupts the services running on the P12. Exercise caution when performing this operation.

Prerequisites

  • The replacement fan module is ready.
  • The faulty fan module has been located.
  • The fan module is located in the middle of the main control board enclosure. You need to remove the cover of the main control board enclosure before replacing the fan module.
  • The cable connections have been labeled.

Precaution

  • Only qualified technical support engineers are allowed to replace a fan module.
  • Ensure that both power supplies of the P12 have been shut down.

Tools and Materials

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • ESD gloves
  • ESD wrist strap
  • ESD bag
  • Scissors
  • Cable tie (used to bind the cables of a fan module)
  • Labels

Procedure

  1. Wear the ESD wrist strap and ESD gloves. For details, see Put on an ESD wrist strap in Replacing a Main Control Board Enclosure.
  2. Use KVM to log in to the OS as user root (default password is Root@storage), then run poweroff to poweroff the node and wait for the shutdown to complete.

    Wait for the KVM screen to have no output, indicates that the shutdown has been completed.

  3. Label the cables on the P12 and disconnect the P12 from the power sockets and peripheral devices.
  4. Pull out the main control board enclosure.

    1. Press the buttons on the inner sides of the two handles on the back of the enclosure, as shown in step 1 in Figure 4-9.
    2. Open the handles completely, as shown in step 2 in Figure 4-9.
    3. The main control board enclosure will be slowly pulled out when you open the handles, as shown in step 3 in Figure 4-9. Pull out the main control board enclosure and place it on an ESD platform.

  5. Remove the cover of the main control board enclosure.

    1. Loosen the screw that fastens the cover of the main control board enclosure counterclockwise, as shown in step 1 in Figure 4-10.
    2. Remove the cover of the main control board enclosure backward, as shown in step 2 in Figure 4-10.

  6. Remove the fan module.

    NOTE:
    The fans of the P12 cannot be replaced separately. The fan module that contains the fan bracket must be replaced.
    1. Take out the ultracapacitor.
      1. Open the battery box on the air deflector.
      2. Take out the ultracapacitor in the battery case.
      3. Separate the ultracapacitor and air deflector along the cable rail of the air deflector.
    2. Pull out the air director upward, as shown in step 1 in Figure 4-11.
    3. Loosen the two screws that fix the fan module to the main control board enclosure, as shown in step 2 in Figure 4-11.
    4. Disconnect the five cables between the fan module and main board.
    5. Pull out the fan module upward, as shown in step 3 in Figure 4-11.

  7. Put the removed fan module into an ESD bag.
  8. Take the replacement fan module out of its ESD bag.
  9. Install the fan module.
    1. Install the fan module downward, as shown in step 1 in Figure 4-12.
    2. Fasten the two screws that fix the fan module to the main control board enclosure, as shown in step 2 in Figure 4-12.
    3. Connect the five cables between the fan module and main board.
    4. Install the air director downward, as shown in step 3 in Figure 4-12.

    5. Secure the ultracapacitor. a. Secure the cable of the ultracapacitor along the air deflector's rail. b. Put the ultracapacitor into the air deflector's battery case and secure it. c. Put on the battery case cover.
  10. Install the cover of the main control board enclosure.

    1. Push the cover of the main control board enclosure into place, as shown in step 1 in Figure 4-13.
    2. Fasten the screw on the cover clockwise, as shown in step 2 in Figure 4-13.

  11. Install the main control board enclosure.

    1. Hold the main control board enclosure and slide it into the cabinet, as shown in step 1 in Figure 4-14.
    2. Lift the two handles on the back of the main control board enclosure upward to push the main control board enclosure into place, as shown in step 2 in Figure 4-14. Close the two handles.

  12. Correctly connect the P12 to the power sockets and peripheral devices according to the cable connection labels. Then power on the P12.
  13. Log in to the device management software and choose Device Management > Device Info to check the status of the fan module, as shown in Figure 4-15.

    • If the fan module is in the Normal state, the fan module is successfully installed.
    • If the fan module is in the Fault state, the replacement fan module may be incorrectly installed. Remove the replacement fan module and install it again.

Follow-up Procedure

After the fan module is replaced, label the replaced fan module to facilitate subsequent operations.
