Replacing a System Disk Module

System disk modules are used to boot operating systems.

Impact on the System

If the two system disk modules form a RAID 1, the system will not be affected. Otherwise, the system will break down.

Prerequisites

  • Prepare the FRU replacement tool.

    The FRU replacement tool provided by SmartKit helps to complete the online replacement of the disk module. For details about the mapped SmartKit version, see OceanStor 9000 Version Mapping.

    To obtain the tool, log in to technical support web site (http://support.huawei.com/enterprise/).
    1. Obtain the SmartKit tool package and install the tool: navigate to Support > Tools > SmartKit > SmartKit VXRXCXXRCX > SmartKit VXRXCXXRCX.zip.
    2. Obtain and import the tool package of FRU replacement: navigate to Support > Tools > SmartKit > SmartKit VXRXCXXRCX > SmartKit VXRXCXXRCX_Tool_fru.zip.
    3. Obtain and import the service package of FRU replacement: navigate to Support > Software Download > Cloud Storage > Scale-out Storage > OceanStor 9000 > OceanStor 9000 VX00R00XCXXSPCXXX > OceanStor_9000_VX00R00XCXXSPCXXX-toolcase.zip. Then after unziping this package, the OceanStor 9000 VX00R00XCXXSPCXXX_Pkg_FRU_limited.zip file is the service package.

  • The replacement system disk module is ready.
  • The faulty system disk modules have been located. Figure 2-7 shows the system disk module slots.

Precaution

  • Do not remove the two system disk modules at the same time. Otherwise, the device cannot work.
  • After a system disk module is replaced, data will be reconstructed on the new system disk. Do not remove and insert the other system disk module within 4 hours. Otherwise, the device cannot work.
  • To prevent damaging the system disk module or connectors, remove or install the system disk module with even force.
  • When you remove a system disk module, first remove it from the port. Wait at least 30 seconds and remove the system disk module completely from the storage node.
  • To prevent a system disk module from damage, wait at least 1 minute after removal and before reinserting a system disk module, or after insertion and before removing a system disk module.
  • To avoid data loss, you only need to replace the system disk module whose Fault indicator is red on.
  • To avoid system failures, do not reuse disks.

Tools and Materials

  • Electrostatic discharge (ESD) gloves
  • ESD wrist straps
  • ESD bags
  • Labels

Procedure

  1. Wear an ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves.
  2. Remove the disk module.
    1. Push the spring that secures the disk ejector lever, as shown in step 1 in Figure 2-8.

    2. Hold the ejector lever, and pull the disk module out by approximately 3 cm, as shown in step 2 in Figure 2-8.
    3. Wait at least 30 seconds until the disk module stops and then slowly pull it out, as shown in step 3 in Figure 2-8.
  3. Put the removed disk module in an ESD bag.
  4. Enable PHY of the slot where the faulty disk sits.
    1. Use KVM to log in to the operating system of the node and run the smp_phy_control --phy=slotid --op=lr /dev/bsg/expander-0\:0 command to enable PHY of the slot where the faulty disk sits.

      slotid in the command is the internal slot ID of the system disk. To obtain slotid, log in to DeviceManager, view the slot information in the System Disk Is Faulty Or Removed alarm, and confirm the slot ID according to the following table:

    2. Run the smp_discover --phy=slotid /dev/bsg/expander-0\:0 command and check if the value of negotiated logical link rate is phy enabled.

      • If yes, go to 5.
      • If no, contact technical support engineers.

  5. Take the replacement disk module out of its ESD bag.
  6. Install the disk module.
    1. Raise the ejector lever and push the disk module in along the guide rails until it does not move, as shown in step 1 in Figure 2-9.

    2. Ensure that the ejector lever is fastened to the beam, and lower the ejector lever to completely insert the disk into the slot, as shown in step 2 in Figure 2-9.
  7. Wait 3 minutes and then check the Fault and Active indicators on the disk module to determine whether the disk module is successfully installed.

    • If the Active indicator is steady on or blinking green, and the disk module Fault indicator is off, the installation is successful.
    • Possible causes as to why the disk module Fault indicator is steady yellow are:
      • The disk module has not been firmly inserted. Wait 1 minute and then reinsert it.
      • If the disk module Fault indicator is still steady yellow after you have reinserted the disk module, the replacement disk module may be faulty. Replace it with another one.
      • If the Fault indicator is still steady yellow after the replacement, the link of the disk slot may be broken. In this case, contact technical support.

  8. Use the KVM to log in to the operating system of the node, and run the cat /sys/block/sda/device/raid_devices/0\:1\:0\:0/state command to check the RAID status of the system disk.

    • When the status is resyncing, the system disk RAID is synchronizing.

    • When the status changes to active, synchronization of the system disk RAID is complete. This process takes up to four hours.
      node6:~ # cat /sys/block/sda/device/raid_devices/0\:1\:0\:0/state
      active
      

  9. Inspect the system using SmartKit. Choose Home > Storage > Routine Maintenance > More > Inspection to check the system status. For details, see the OceanStor 9000 Routine Maintenance.

    • If all inspection items are successful: The inspection is successful.
    • If some inspection items fail the inspection: The inspection is failed. Rectify the faults by taking recommended actions in the inspection reports. You need to reperform inspection after rectifying. If the inspection is still failed, contact Huawei technical support.

Follow-up Procedure

After replacing the system disk module, label the replaced system disk modules to facilitate subsequent operations.
