Replacing a Main Control Board Enclosure

This section explains how to replace a storage node by replacing main control board enclosure for a P36/C36.

Impact on the System

The P36/C36 must be powered off before replacement of a main control board enclosure. Therefore, the services running on the P36/C36 will be affected. Perform this operation with caution.

Prerequisites

  • A new main control board enclosure is available.
  • Before replacing the main control board enclosure, label the cables on the P36/C36.

Precaution

Each P36/C36 has two power supplies. Ensure that both power supplies are disconnected.

Tools and Materials

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • ESD gloves
  • ESD wrist strap
  • ESD bag
  • Labels

Procedure

  1. Wear the ESD wrist strap or gloves. For details, see Wearing an ESD Wrist Strap in Replacing a Main Control Board Enclosure.
  2. Use KVM to log in to the OS as user root (default password is Root@storage), then run poweroff to poweroff the node and wait for the shutdown to complete.

    Wait for the KVM screen to have no output, indicates that the shutdown has been completed.

  3. Label the cables on the P36/C36 and disconnect the P36/C36 from the power sockets and other devices.
  4. Remove the main control board enclosure.

    1. Press the buttons on the two handles at the rear of the P36/C36 chassis, as shown in step 1 in Figure 6-71.
    2. Release the two handles and push them down, as shown in step 2 in Figure 6-71.
    3. The main control board enclosure slides out when you push the two handles down, as shown in step 3 in Figure 6-71. Take out the main control board enclosure and place it on a clean ESD platform.

  5. Remove the system disk modules and NVDIMM module of the main control board enclosure in turn, and put them into ESD bags. For details on how to remove them, see Replacing a Service Disk Module and Replacing an NVDIMM Module.
  6. Take the main control board enclosure to be installed out of the ESD bag.
  7. Install the system disk modules and NVDIMM module to the main control board enclosure in turn. For details on how to install them, see Replacing a Service Disk Module and Replacing an NVDIMM Module.
  8. Install the main control board enclosure.

    1. Push the main control board enclosure into the chassis, as shown in step 1 in Figure 6-72.
    2. Hold the two handles on the main control board enclosure and push the main control board enclosure in place, as shown in step 2 in Figure 6-72. Close the two handles.

    After hardware installation, if there are operations need to be performed using BIOS, for the initial startup, clear NVDIMM data using the BIOS. Otherwise, the operating system may fail to be started. Before connecting the power cable and powering on the storage node, connect the KVM cable, and then adjust the display content of the KVM to the port connected to the storage node.

  9. According to the labels, connect the P36/C36 to the power socket and other devices. Then power on the P36/C36.
  10. Clear NVDIMM data.
    1. During the system startup process, press Esc when the Press Esc for boot options message is displayed, choose SCU, input the BIOS password to enter the BIOS screen.

    2. Choose Security > Clear NvDimm Flash.

    3. In the Clear NvDimm Flash? dialog box, select Yes and press Enter.

    4. Wait 20 seconds. Check whether the displayed dialog box states "Clear NvDimm flash success. Please reboot system!"

      • If yes, go to 10.e.
      • If no, contact technical support.

    5. Press Enter and then F10. In the dialog box that is displayed, select Yes to save the configuration and restart the storage node.

  11. Check whether the components are successfully installed.

    For details, see Replacing a Service Disk Module and Replacing an NVDIMM Module.

  12. Activate the system disk RAID group of the storage node.
    1. If the following information is displayed during the startup of the operating system of the storage node, press Ctrl+C to go to the SAS BIOS interface.

      Press Ctrl-C to start LSI Corp Configuration Utility...

    2. Press Enter and choose RAID Properties > View Existing Volume > Manage Volume > Activate Volume, as shown in Figure 6-79.

    3. Highlight Y to activate the RAID group, as shown in Figure 6-80.

    4. choose SAS Topology > LSI, press Alt+B to set the value of Device Info to Boot. See Figure 6-81.

    5. Press Esc, choose Save changes then exit this menu, press Esc twice, then chooseExit the Configuration Utility and Reboot.
  13. Configure an IP address for an IPMI Port of the storage node.
    1. On the KVM, run the restart command to restart the storage node.
    2. During the system startup process, press Esc when the Press Esc for boot options message is displayed, choose SCU, input the BIOS password to enter the BIOS screen.
    3. Navigate to Advanced > IPMI BMC Configuration > BMC Configuration.
    4. Set IP Source to Static.
    5. Set a correct IPv4 IP Address, IPv4 Subnet Mask, and IPv4 Gateway Address.
    6. Press F10 and select yes to save configurations and exit the BIOS screen.
  14. Run the script to check the status of the storage node.

    cd /opt/product/deploy/script

    ./envcheck.py

  15. Check the silk screen.
    1. Run ipmitool fru on the KVM to check whether the value of Product Name is OceanStor 9000 B Node.

      • If no, go to 16.

    2. Contact technical support engineers then configure the value of Product Name as OceanStor 9000 C Node.
  16. Check whether the network ports of the storage node are named A0-0, A0-1, B3-0, and B3-1.
    1. Run ifconfig -a on the KVM to check whether the network ports of the storage node are named A0-0, A0-1, B3-0, and B3-1.

      • If yes, go to 17.
      • If no, go to 16.b.

    2. Run reboot to restart the storage node to identify the new network adapter.
  17. Connect signal cables to the storage node according to the cable connection label.
  18. On the DeviceManager, view the node status.
    1. On the maintenance terminal, log in to the DeviceManager in a browser.
    2. In the Alarms area on the home page, check whether new alarms are generated.

      • If yes, handle the alarms by following the alarm help information.
      • If no, go to 18.c.

    3. On the right of the home page, click System to go to the System page.
    4. Click Device View tab to go to the Device View page.
    5. In Nodes, view the status of the new storage node.

      • Health Status: Normal
      • Running Status: Online

  19. Wait 10 minutes and run reboot to restart the storage node.

    After the storage node is successfully restarted, the SN of the subrack of the new main control board will be updated to the configuration file.

Follow-up Procedure

After replacing the main control board enclosure, label the removed main control board enclosure for subsequent handling.
