display multicast layer-2 bind

Function

Using the display multicast layer-2 bind command, you can view bindings between multicast VLANs and user VLANs.

Format

display multicast layer-2 bind [ mvlan vlan-id ]

If vlan-id is not specified, bindings between multicast VLANs and user VLANs on all interfaces are displayed.

Usage Guidelines

Usage Scenario

After configuring multicast VLAN replication on an interface, you can run the display multicast layer-2 bind command to view the configuration. This command can be used for fault location when multicast VLAN replication fails.

Precautions

If no binding between any multicast VLAN and user VLAN, the display multicast layer-2 bind command does not display any information.

Function

The display multicast vlan mvlan command displays information about multicast VLANs.

Format

display multicast vlan mvlan [ vlan-id ]

Multicast-vlan

ID of a multicast VLAN.

User-vlan Number

Number of user VLANs bound to a multicast VLAN.

IGMP snooping state

Whether IGMP snooping is enabled in a multicast VLAN.

  • Enable: indicates that IGMP snooping has been enabled.

  • Disable: indicates that IGMP snooping has not been enabled.

User-vlan

ID of a user VLAN.

Snooping-state

Whether IGMP snooping is enabled in a user VLAN.

Function

The display multicast vlan user-vlan command, you can view information about user VLANs.

multicast layer-2 bind vlan

Function

The multicast layer-2 bind vlan command binds user VLANs to a multicast VLAN on an interface.

The undo multicast layer-2 bind vlan command cancels the configuration.

By default, user VLANs are not bound to a multicast VLAN on an interface.

Format

multicast layer-2 bind vlan vlan-id1 [ to vlan-id2 ] mvlan mvlan-id

undo multicast layer-2 bind vlan { all | vlan-id1 [ to vlan-id2 ] }

Specifies the ID of the user VLAN. vlan-id2 and vlan-id1 define a range together. If vlan-id2 is not specified, only the VLAN specified by vlan-id1 serves as the user VLAN.

Specifies the ID of a multicast VLAN to which user VLANs are bound.

Usage Guidelines

Usage Scenario

A carrier provides the multicast service for multiple Internet service providers (ISPs) and assigns a multicast VLAN to each ISP to isolate multicast data and routes. The ISPs provide multicast services for users on different interfaces. The interfaces may be added to the same user VLAN, so multicast packets of an ISP may be sent to users that do not subscribe to services of this ISP.

To solve this problem, bind the user VLAN to multicast VLANs of the ISPs whose services are ordered on user-side interfaces. Then the user-side interfaces accept only the data from multicast VLANs of the specified ISPs.

Prerequisites

The user VLAN and multicast VLAN have been created using the vlan command, and IGMP snooping has been enabled using the igmp-snooping enable (VLAN view) command in the VLANs.

Precautions

A user VLAN can be bound to only one multicast VLAN, but a multicast VLAN can have multiple user VLANs.

If you run the multicast layer-2 bind vlan command multiple times, all the configurations take effect.

multicast vlan enable

Function

The multicast vlan enable command configures the current VLAN as a multicast VLAN.

The undo multicast vlan enable command restores the current VLAN to be a common VLAN.

By default, a VLAN is a common VLAN.

Usage Guidelines

Usage Scenario

Generally, a switch needs to replicate multicast packets for each VLAN when users in different VLANs need to receive multicast data from the same multicast source. If a multicast VLAN is configured and the VLANs that users belong to are configured as the user VLANs of the multicast VLAN, the switch only needs to replicate the multicast data for the multicast VLAN. Multicast data is then replicated to the user VLANs by the multicast VLAN. This reduces load on the upstream router and separates the multicast source from the users.

Prerequisites

IGMP snooping has been enabled in a VLAN using the igmp snooping enable (VLAN view) command.

Follow-up Procedure

Run the multicast vlan user-vlan command to bind user VLANs to the multicast VLAN.

Precautions

  • A multicast VLAN cannot be configured as a user VLAN. A user VLAN cannot be configured as a multicast VLAN.
  • If MAC address-based forwarding is configured using the multicast layer-2 forwarding-mode command in a VLAN, the VLAN cannot be configured as a multicast VLAN.
  • Before running the undo multicast vlan enable command in a multicast VLAN, delete all the user VLANs from the multicast VLAN.

Function

The multicast vlan igmp-querier-election command enables the querier election for user VLANs.

The undo multicast vlan igmp-querier-election command disables the querier election for user VLANs.

By default, the querier election is disabled.

Usage Scenario

If two devices connect to the same user VLAN and both have the multicast VLAN configured, hosts in the user VLAN will receive two copies of a multicast flow. To avoid this problem, enable querier election for user VLANs in the multicast VLAN view on both the devices. Only the device that wins the querier election can generate Layer 2 multicast forwarding entries according to received Report messages.

Prerequisites

The user VLAN has been bound to the multicast VLAN.

Precautions

Before enabling querier election, ensure that a source IP address has been configured on each switch for the Query messages sent by the device using the igmp snooping send-query source-address command.

If you run the multicast vlan igmp-querier-election user-vlan command multiple times, all the configurations take effect.

multicast vlan user-vlan

Function

The multicast vlan user-vlan command sets the mapping between a multicast VLAN and a user VLAN.

The undo multicast vlan user-vlan command removes the mapping between a multicast VLAN and a user VLAN.

By default, a multicast VLAN is not mapped to any user VLAN.

Usage Scenario

After a multicast VLAN is configured, the multicast-vlan user-vlan command can be used to configure a mapping between the multicast VLAN and user VLANs. Then, a Layer 3 device sends only one copy of multicast data to the multicast VLAN, and does not need to replicate multicast data for each VLAN. This reduces the network resource consumption and reduces the burden of the Layer 3 device.

Prerequisites

A user VLAN and a multicast VLAN have been created using the vlan command, and the multicast VLAN function has been enabled using the multicast vlan enable command on the multicast VLAN.

Precautions

The following conditions must be met to configure user VLANs for a multicast VLAN:
  • After a VLAN is configured as a user VLAN, the VLAN cannot be configured as a multicast VLAN.
  • After users VLANs are bound to a multicast VLAN, unbind the user VLANs from the multicast VLAN before deleting the user VLANs or the multicast VLAN.
  • A user VLAN is bound to only one multicast VLAN. The multicast VLAN has one or more user VLANs.
  • If you run the multicast vlan user-vlan command multiple times, all the configurations take effect.
