The master in a VRRP group monitors an interface or other objects such as a Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD) session in Reduced mode. If a fault occurs in the monitored object, the VRRP priority of the master is reduced to trigger an active/standby switchover. After the fault is rectified, the monitored interface or link goes Up and the original master's priority recovers. The original master can switch back to the Master state only after the original master's VRRP priority is higher than the new master's priority and the original master receives VRRP Advertisement packets from the new master. If the active/standby switchover of the uplink is finished before the active/standby switchover of VRRP, uplink traffic is lost. To resolve this issue, enable rapid VRRP switchback.

When the original master's VRRP priority recovers, rapid VRRP switchback enables the original master to immediately switch to the master without waiting for VRRP Advertisement packets from the new master.


Rapid VRRP switchback takes effect only for the mVRRP group, and the mVRRP group monitors an interface or other features in Reduced mode.

Perform the following steps on the master in an mVRRP group.


  1. Run system-view

    The system view is displayed.

  2. Run interface interface-type interface-number

    The view of the interface on which an mVRRP group is configured is displayed.

  3. On an Ethernet interface, run undo portswitch

    The interface is switched to Layer 3 mode.

    By default, an Ethernet interface works in Layer 2 mode.

    The mode switching function takes effect when the interface only has attribute configurations (for example, shutdown and description configurations). Alternatively, if configuration information supported by both Layer 2 and Layer 3 interfaces exists (for example, mode lacp and lacp system-id configurations), no configuration that is not supported after the working mode of the interface is switched can exist. If unsupported configurations exist on the interface, delete the configurations first and then run the undo portswitch command.


    If many Ethernet interfaces need to be switched to Layer 3 mode, run the undo portswitch batch interface-type { interface-number1 [ to interface-number2 ] } &<1-10> command in the system view to switch these interfaces to Layer 3 mode in batches.

  4. (Optional) Run vrrp vrid virtual-router-id preempt timer delay 0

    The preemption delay is set to 0 seconds.

    By default, the preemption delay is 0 seconds, indicating that the original master immediately becomes the master after it recovers.


    This step is required only when you have set the preemption delay to a non-zero value.

  5. Run vrrp vrid virtual-router-id fast-resume

    Rapid VRRP switchback is enabled.

    • The vrrp vrid fast-resume command takes precedence over the vrrp recover-delay command. For example, if you enable rapid VRRP switchback for VRRP group 1 and globally set the recovery delay to a non-zero value, the configured recovery delay does not take effect.

    • After you run the vrrp vrid fast-resume command to enable rapid VRRP switchback, this function is disabled if any of the following conditions is met:

      • The preemption delay is set to a non-zero value.
      • The non-preemption mode is used.
      • The mVRRP group is deleted.

  6. Run commit

    The configuration is committed.
