BFD for Link-bundle

Two devices are connected through a Layer 3 Eth-Trunk link that has multiple member links. BFD is required to detect faults on the Eth-Trunk link.

Only one common single-hop BFD session can be bound to the Eth-Trunk to detect the member link of an Eth-Trunk member interface. If the member link fails, the BFD session considers the Eth-Trunk faulty. Actually, other member links are still available.

BFD for Link-bundle can solve this problem.

In Figure 2-12, BFD for Link-bundle uses one main session and multiple sub-sessions.

  • A sub-session independently detects an Eth-Trunk member link and reports the detection result to the main session. The sub-sessions use parameters of the main session.

  • The main session creates a sub-session for each Eth-Trunk member interface, collects detection results of sub-sessions, and determines the Eth-Trunk status.

    • The main session is Up as long as one sub-session is Up.

    • If there is no sub-session, the main session goes Down and notifies the upper-layer applications that the status is unknown.

    • If the Eth-Trunk has only one member interface and the sub-session for detecting the member link is Up, the main session goes Down when the member interface is removed from the Eth-Trunk.

The local discriminator of the main session ranges from 0x00100000 to 0x00103fff, and does not use values of discriminators of common BFD sessions. The main session does not learn the remote discriminator because it does not receive or send packets. The local discriminator of a sub-session uses the value range of discriminators of dynamic BFD sessions, and the discriminator algorithm is the same as that of dynamic BFD sessions.
