Feature Limitations

  • When configuring dynamic ARP on the switch, pay attention to the following points:

    If the value of the aging time is set too small (for example, 1 minute), the system consumes most resources on updating dynamic ARP entries, affecting the processing of other services.

  • When configuring Layer 2 proxy ARP on the switch, pay attention to the following points:

    When Layer 2 proxy ARP is enabled, ARP snooping is automatically enabled and sets up ARP snooping entries recording senders' information by means of monitoring ARP messages. When most network users obtain IP addresses using DHCP, to avoid proxy reply errors from fake ARP snooping entries generated by the bogus ARP messages that network attackers send, disable the learning function in the VLAN view of ARP snooping entries.

  • When configuring egress ARP inspection (EAI) on the switch, pay attention to the following points:
    • After EAI is enabled, the switch sends all the received ARP Request packets to the CPU for software forwarding, which degrades the ARP packet forwarding performance.

    • EAI and MAC-forced forwarding (MFF) cannot be configured in the same VLAN because the two functions use mutually exclusive ARP mechanisms. MFF uses the proxy ARP mechanism, whereas EAI forwards ARP Request packets.

    • EAI cannot be configured in the super-VLAN.

    • When both EAI and transparent transmission of Layer 2 protocol packets are configured, EAI takes effect preferentially.

  • When both proxy ARP anyway and port-based automatic local ARP attack defense are configured on a device, only the proxy ARP anyway function takes effect.
  • The CE6810LI does not support IPv4 Layer 3 forwarding. After the IPv4 function is enabled on an interface of the CE6810LI, the configured IPv4 address can only be used to manage the switch.

  • If the system resource mode of the CE8860EI is large-arp, and the IfType field displays 8 and the TargetBlade and TargetPort fields display non-zero values in the output of the display fei ipv4 arp command run in the diagnostic view, the outbound interface of the ARP entry is a physical member interface of an Eth-Trunk. The switch cannot perform Eth-Trunk load balancing and preferential forwarding of local traffic for Layer 3 unicast traffic corresponding to the ARP entry.
