Application Scenarios for Packet Filtering

Packet filtering allows the device to only permit trusted packets to pass through. The device discards any untrusted packets. This function improves network security and allows flexible network planning.

Figure 8-1 shows an example of a campus network that is using packet filtering. In this case, packet filtering allows the PC in the multimedia room to only access the FTP server. The PC in the teacher's office, however, can access both the FTP server and the web server.
