Making a Stack Plan

Before setting up a stack, you are advised to make a proper stack plan and then connect member switches using cables and complete software configuration. The stack plan includes:
  • Determine the member switch quantity and models.

    You can determine the member switch quantity and models based on requirements including the network access port quantity and uplink bandwidth.

  • Determine member IDs of member switches.

    In a stack, member switches are identified and managed using member IDs. Before adding switches to a stack, determine their member IDs to ensure that these member IDs are unique.

  • Determine roles of member switches.

    You can specify a member switch as the master switch based on requirements. To achieve this purpose, set a higher stack priority for this member switch during software configuration. This setting ensures that it competes to be the master switch during role election. For details about role election, see Stack Setup.

  • Determine a stack domain ID.

    Ensure that this stack domain ID is unique among all stack domain IDs on the network.

  • Determine the stack connection topology and ports used for stack connections.

    You can determine the stack connection topology and ports used for stack connections based on reliability requirements and port information of member switches. For details about the stack connection topology, see Stack Setup.

    If two switches need to set up a stack, the chain topology is recommended. If three or more switches need to set up a stack, the ring topology is recommended because it is more reliable than the chain topology.
