SNMP Configuration

SNMP Configuration

This chapter describes how to configure Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) to manage network elements.

Context

The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is a standard network management protocol widely used on TCP/IP networks. The SNMP framework uses a central computer where the network management software is installed to manage network elements. This central computer is called network management station (NMS). SNMP provides three SNMP versions: SNMPv1, SNMPv2c, and SNMPv3. An SNMP system can run one or more SNMP versions.

NOTE:
A lack of authentication capabilities in SNMPv1 and SNMPv2c results in vulnerability to security threats, so SNMPv3 is recommended.
