Overview of Roaming
Definition
WLAN roaming on a WLAN allows STAs to move from one AP to another belonging to the same ESS, with uninterrupted service transmission. In Figure 6-1, STA moves from AP_1 to AP_2 without service interruption.
Purpose
The biggest advantage of WLAN networks is that a STA can move within a WLAN network without physical media restrictions. WLAN roaming allows the STA to move within a WLAN network without service interruption. An ESS includes multiple APs, and when a STA moves from one AP to another, WLAN roaming ensures seamless transition of STA services.
Retains the STA's IP address. After roaming, the STA can still access the initially associated network and retains its services.
Avoids packet loss or service interruption caused by long-term authentication.
