Replacing a Fan Module

Replacing a Fan Module

Fan modules dissipate heat and support area-based fan speed adjustment.

Impact on the System

Before replacing a fan module, you must power off the storage node. This will adversely affect the services running on the node. Exercise caution when performing this operation.

Prerequisites

  • Before removing a fan module, you must remove the enclosure cover of the storage node.
  • The replacement fan module is ready.
  • The faulty fan module has been located.

Precaution

  • Only technical support engineers are allowed to replace a fan module.
  • A storage node has two power modules. Ensure that both are disconnected.

Tools and Materials

  • Flat-head screwdrivers
  • ESD gloves
  • ESD wrist straps
  • ESD bags
  • Small scissors
  • Cable ties (used to bind the cables of a fan module)
  • Labels

Procedure

  1. Wear an ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves.
  2. Use the KVM to log in to the operating system of the node, enter user name root and its password (default: Root@storage), and run poweroff command to power off the node.

Wait until the KVM has no output. The power-off is complete.

  3. Remove all power cables and external signal cables.
  4. Remove the storage node from the cabinet.
    1. Loosen the captive screws on the panel using a Phillips screwdriver, as shown in step 1 in Figure 4-13.

    2. Slowly pull the storage node out along the guide rails, as shown in step 2 in Figure 4-13.
    3. Press the release buttons on both sides and pull the storage node out of the cabinet along the guide rails, as shown in step 3 in Figure 4-13.
  5. Remove the enclosure cover.
    1. Use a flat-head screwdriver to loosen the latch that secures the ejector lever of the enclosure cover, as shown in step 1 in Figure 4-14.
    2. Open the ejector lever to push the enclosure cover backward, as shown in step 2 in Figure 4-14.

  6. Lift the fan module slowly until the fan module is loose, and remove it from the slot, as shown in Figure 4-15.

  7. Place the removed fan module into an ESD bag.
  8. Take the replacement fan module out of its ESD bag.
  9. Insert the fan module along the guide rails into the slot. Check that the fan cable connector is securely inserted into the mainboard connector. See Figure 4-16.

  10. Install the enclosure cover.
    1. Place the enclosure cover horizontally, align it with the fixing slots on both side panels of the enclosure, and close the ejector lever, as shown in steps 1 and 2 in Figure 4-17.

    2. Tighten the latch to secure the ejector lever of the enclosure cover using flat-head screwdriver, as shown in step 3 in Figure 4-17.
  11. Put the storage node into the cabinet.
    1. Arrange at least four persons to lift the storage node on both sides, align the inner rails on the storage node with the holding rails, and push the storage node into the cabinet along the holding rails, as shown in Figure 4-18.

    2. Press the release buttons on both sides, and push the storage node into the cabinet until the storage node cannot move forward, as shown in Figure 4-19.

    3. Tighten the two captive screws on the mounting ears to secure the storage node, as shown in Figure 4-20.

  12. Connect the storage node to the power sockets and peripheral devices according to the cable connection labels. Then power on the storage node.
  13. Log in to the GUI of iBMC on the storage node. Choose Information > System Info > Fan and query the fan status to check whether the fan is successfully replaced.

    • If yes, information about the new fan will be included in Fan.
    • If no, no information about the new fan will be included in Fan. You need to reperform 2 to 13. If there is still no information about the fan, contact Huawei technical support.

Follow-up Procedure

After replacing the fan module, label the replaced fan module to facilitate subsequent operations.
