Logging In to a Switch Through a CONSOLE Port

Logging In to a Switch Through a CONSOLE Port

Prerequisites for logging in to the switch through the CONSOLE port.
  • A console cable is ready.

  • HyperTerminal software, such as PuTTY, has been installed on the PC.

You can use the built-in HyperTerminal software (such as the HyperTerminal of Windows 2000) on the PC. If no built-in HyperTerminal software is available, use the third-party HyperTerminal software. For details, see the software user guide or online help.

  • Logging in to the switch through the CONSOLE port.
    1. Insert the DB9 connector of the console cable to the 9-pin serial port on the PC, and insert the RJ45 connector to the CONSOLE port of the switch.

The location of the CONSOLE port varies depending on the specific switch model. Figure 8-18 shows an example.

    2. Run the HyperTerminal software on the PC, establish a connection, and set the connection port and communication parameters. PuTTY is used as an example, as shown in Figure 8-19.

A PC may have multiple connection interfaces; therefore, the interface connected through the console cable is selected.

Set Speed(baud) to 9600, Data bits to 8, Stop bits to 1, Parity to None, and Flow control to None.
