DHCP Relay Troubleshooting

This chapter describes common causes of the fault that prevent a client from obtaining the IP address through the DHCP relay and provides the corresponding troubleshooting flowcharts and examples.

Clients Cannot Obtain the IP Address Through the DHCP Relay

This section describes the step-by-step troubleshooting procedure for the fault when the DHCP client uses the DHCP relay agent to assign an IP address from the DHCP server.

Common Causes

The failure to obtain an IP address through the DHCP relay fault is commonly caused by the following:

  • The route established between the relay and server is not correct.
  • The relay does not have the specified server address.
  • The DHCP relay function is not enabled.
Troubleshooting Flowchart

Figure 4-33 shows the troubleshooting flowchart for the fault that prevents the user from logging in to the server through SSH.

Troubleshooting Procedure
Context
NOTE:

After the commands are configured to troubleshoot the faults, check the configuration validation mode to ensure that the configurations take effect. Unless otherwise specified, this manual defaults to immediate validation mode.

  • In immediate validation mode, the configurations take effect after the commands are entered.
  • In two-phase validation mode, after the commands are configured, the commit command needs to be run to commit the configurations.

Save the results of each troubleshooting step so that if your troubleshooting attempts fail to correct the fault, you will have a record of your actions to present to Huawei.

Procedure

  1. Check whether a route exists between the relay agent and DHCP server.

    NOTE:

    Interfaces 1 through 2 in this example are GE 1/0/0, GE 2/0/0, respectively.



    As shown in Figure 4-34 should go above the figure:

    1. Configure the IP address 10.100.1.1 on the GigabitEthernet 1/0/0 (DHCP Relay).
    2. Configure the IP address 172.16.1.2 on the GigabitEthernet 1/0/0 (DHCP Server).
    3. Run the ping 172.16.1.2 on the DHCP Relay.
    4. Run the ping 10.100.1.1 on the DHCP Server.

    If the ping fails, run the display ip routing-table command on the DHCP relay agent and DHCP server to check the routing entry to the peer.

    If the entry does not exist, run the ip route-static 172.16.1.2 16 GigabitEthernet 2/0/0 command on DHCP Relay and the ip route-static 10.100.1.1 16 GigabitEthernet 1/0/0 command on the DHCP server to add a static route.

  2. Run the dhcp select relay command to configure the interface mode of a relay agent to transmit DHCP packets.
  3. Contact Huawei for the following:

    • Results of these troubleshooting procedures.
    • Configuration files, log files, and alarm files of the devices.
