Resuming Device Management in Password Missing or Misoperation Scenarios

Using the Console Interface to Format the Device to Be Upgraded During Device Startup

A device restart interrupts services. Exercise caution when you perform this operation.
Prerequisites
  • A Console interface is available for device login.
  • The device can be restarted.
Procedure
  1. Log in to the device using the Console interface.
  2. Restart the device. For example, during the device restart, the following information is displayed on the HyperTerminal:

  3. Press Ctrl+B within 3 seconds after the "Press Ctrl+B to enter Main Menu... 3" message is displayed.

  4. Enter a password to access the BootLoad menu.

    NOTE:
    • The default menu passwords for the boot system and BIOS system are both WWW@HUAWEI. Using the default password is vulnerable to security threats. You are advised to change the default password and update it regularly. You can change a password on the main menu of the system.
    • After an upgrade, the device will still use the original menu password of the BIOS system. You are advised to change this password and regularly update it.
    • The new password is at least six characters long and contains at least two of upper-case letters, lower-case letters, digits, and special characters.
            Bootload Menu(Hiboot Version: 06.13)
    
         1. Boot with default mode
         2. Boot from SATA
         3. Enter ethernet submenu
         4. Set boot file and path
         5. Modify boot ROM password
         6. List file in SATA
         7. Modify System and Chassis Parameters
         8. Modify start mode
         9. Clear expand flag
        10. Clear password for console user
        11. Reboot
        12. Enter TPM Submenu
    
    Enter your choice(1-12): 
  5. Select 3. Enter ethernet submenu to access the Ethernet submenu.

            Ethernet Submenu
    
         1. Install OS through ethernet interface
         2. Install OS Format Hard Disk
         3. Boot OS through ethernet interface
         4. Modify ethernet interface boot parameters
         5. Return
    
      Note: Need to open tftp & ftp tools both while downloading.
    
    Enter your choice(1-5):
    
  6. Select 4. Modify ethernet interface boot parameters to set the server address and password and specify the file to be downloaded. In this situation, the FTP server must be connected to the device through a management network interface.
    NOTE:
    • You can deploy an independent FTP/TFTP server or configure a local PC as an FTP/TFTP server.
    • If an independent FTP/TFTP server is used, ensure that the FTP/TFTP server is physically connected to the device.
    • Both FTP and TFTP services must be enabled during the upgrade. Therefore, specifying the same working path for the FTP and TFTP services is recommended.

  7. After setting the parameters, select 2. Install OS and Format Hard Disk to format the CF card. Wait until the device is started.
    NOTE:
    If no backup is available, the configuration file will be lost after the CF card is formatted. To avoid this situation, select 1. Install OS through ethernet interface. When uploading the new configuration file, ensure the uniqueness of the file name.

         4. Modify ethernet interface boot parameters

    • The system software package may fail to be downloaded. If the failure occurs repeatedly, verify FTP and TFTP configurations, restart the services, and download the package again.
    • The default password to access the Kernel menu is WWW@HUAWEI. Using the default password poses security risks.
    • After device is upgraded, the password for the BootROM menu remains. Changing the default password is recommended after upgrade.
    • The new password is at least six characters long and contains at least two of upper-case letters, lower-case letters, digits, and special characters.
  8. If the "Please Press ENTER." message is displayed, the device has been successfully started with null configuration.

    Press Enter and specify a new password for device login through the Console interface. Then log in to the device.

  9. After the login succeeds, configure the address of the management network interface and complete other operations.

Clearing the Console Password by Pressing Ctrl+B During Device Startup

Prerequisites
  • A Console interface is available for device login.
  • The device can be restarted.
Procedure
  1. Log in to the device using the Console interface.
  2. Restart the device.

    For example, during the device restart, information similar to the following appears on the HyperTerminal:

  5. Choose Clear password for console user from the main menu to set a console password clearance flag. The message "clear console pwd flag has been set" is displayed.

  6. When the message "Please Press ENTER." is displayed, the system has been successfully started with empty configuration. Press Enter and set a new console password. Then you can log in to the device. After the login succeeds, configure the address of the management network interface and complete other configuration operations.

  7. Select 11. Reboot to restart the device to make the new device configuration file take effect.
