Built-in System Software Is Incorrect or Does Not Exist

Incorrect or no system software was delivered along with the device. You need to load the system software through the network management interface by using a PC.

Uploading the System Software Through the Network Management Interface and Loading the System Software Through the BootROM

Introduction to uploading the systems software through the network management interface and loading he system software through the BootROM.

Context

To upgrade the system through the BIOS, you have to adopt the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) or Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) client mode. The operation terminal (PC) must be connected to the ME device through the serial interface and communicate with the ME device through HyperTerminal.

Procedure

  1. Connect the console interface of the MPU of the ME60 to be upgraded to the COM interface of the PC and configure the HyperTerminal.

    One PC can function as both the FTP server and the terminal.

    For instructions on how to configure the HyperTerminal, it is assumed that the operating system is Windows XP.

    1. Choose Start > Programs > Accessories > Communications > HyperTerminal. Then, in the window that is displayed, enter a name for the connection, for example, COMM1.

    2. Click OK. The following window is displayed. In the Connecting using drop-down list, choose COM interfaces.

    3. Click OK. The following window is displayed. Set the properties of COM1. In the Bits per second drop-down list, choose 9600. For the other parameters, use the default settings.

      Then, click OK to complete the HyperTerminal configuration.

      The terminal displays the device prompt ME60, indicating that the device is ready for login.

  2. Connect the MGMT-ETH interface on the master MPU of the ME60 to the network management interface on the PC. Then, run the FTP server program on the PC and create an FTP user.

    NOTE:
    In this step, the window displayed may vary with different FTP software.

    Set parameters of the FTP server program, including the home directory, user name, and password, as shown in Figure 3-10.

  3. Restart the ME60. The HyperTerminal interface displays the following product information:

  4. At the prompt of Press Ctrl+B to enter bootload Menu... 3, press Ctrl+B within three seconds.

  5. Enter the password for entering the big BootROM menu. Select 3 Enter ethernet submenu to enter the Ethernet interface submenu.

    NOTE:
    • The default menu passwords for the boot system and BIOS system are both WWW@HUAWEI. Using the default password is vulnerable to security threats. You are advised to change the default password and update it regularly. You can change a password on the main menu of the system.
    • After an upgrade, the device will still use the original menu password of the BIOS system. You are advised to change this password and regularly update it.
    • The new password is at least six characters long and contains at least two of upper-case letters, lower-case letters, digits, and special characters.

  6. Select 4. Modify ethernet interface boot parameters to change the boot parameters.

  8. After the system software is loaded, the board automatically resets. When the "Press Ctrl+B to enter bootload Menu...3" message is displayed, press Ctrl+B within 3 seconds to access the bootload menu.

    The method of specifying the PAF, License, and configuration file is the same, and is not mentioned here.

  12. Uploading the system software of the slave MPU.

    The version of the slave MPU must be the same as the version of the master MPU. Otherwise, the slave MPU keeps restarting when the device is started.

    Plug the console cable to the console interface of the slave MPU, and plug the network management cable to the MGMT-ETH interface on the slave MPU. Then, restart the ME60. The loading process is the same as that with the master MPU.

  13. After the system software is loaded to the slave MPU, plug the console cable to the console interface on the master MPU and enter the big BootROM menu. Then, select 2. Boot from Cfcard to start the ME60 from the CF card. The setting process is the same as that with the slave MPU.

    NOTE:
    If no slave MPU exists on the ME60, you can skip Step 14 and directly restart the ME60.
