Introduction to PPPoE

Introduction to PPPoE

This section describes the definition and purpose of PPPoE.

PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE) is a link layer protocol that encapsulates Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) frames into Ethernet frames. PPPoE enables multiple hosts on an Ethernet to connect to a broadband remote access server (BRAS).

Carriers want to connect multiple hosts at a site to the same remote access device. The access device is expected to provide access control and accounting for these hosts in a manner similar to dial-up access using PPP. Using PPPoE, carriers can achieve this goal at lower cost because Ethernet is the most cost-effective among all access technologies and PPP implements access control and accounting.

PPPoE allows a large number of hosts on an Ethernet to connect to the Internet using a remote access device and controls each host using PPP. PPPoE features a large application scale, high security, and convenient accounting.
