Application Scenarios for Virtualization

Figure 3-1 shows an application scenario of virtualization.
Figure 3-1  Application scenario of virtualization

Some small enterprises have multiple branches and need to deploy many office applications in the branches. Each branch requires CT devices such as routers, firewalls, load balancers (LBs), and WAN optimization controllers (WOCs), and needs to deploy different IT applications. In traditional deployment mode, the enterprises need to deploy many CT devices and multiple servers for the applications. As a result, the deployment and maintenance costs are high, and services are inflexible.

The virtualization feature allows the enterprises to deploy common office applications on multiple VMs of a router to reduce cost on application servers and simplify device management. The VMs provide the same application services as traditional application servers.

The following operating systems can be installed on VMs: Windows Server 2003 32bit, Windows Server 2008 R1 32bit, Windows Server 2008 R2 64bit, Windows 7 32bit sp1, Red Hat Enterprise 6.5, Red Hat Enterprise 7.0, SUSE Enterprise 11 SP1, Fedora Core 20, and Debian Wheezy.

It is recommended that the Windows + E1000 or Linux + Virtio combination mode be used. These two combination modes have the best performance.
