Configuring Local Port Mirroring

Context

In local port mirroring, an observing port is directly connected to a monitoring device and directly forwards the packets copied from a mirrored port to the monitoring device for analysis.

Procedure

  1. Run the system-view command to enter the system view.
  2. Configure local observing ports.

    • Configure a single local observing port.

      Run the observe-port [ observe-port-index ] interface interface-type interface-number [ untag-packet ] command to configure a local observing port.

    • Configure multiple local observing ports in a batch.

      1. Run the observe-port [ observe-port-index ] interface-range { interface-type interface-number [ to interface-type interface-number ] } &<1-8> [ untag-packet ] command to configure multiple local observing ports in a batch.

        Local observing ports configured in a batch can be bound to the same mirrored port to simplify the configuration. Therefore, batch configuration is recommended in 1:N mirroring.

      2. (Optional) Run the observe-port observe-port-index interface-range { add | delete } interface-type interface-number command to add or delete local observing ports to or from multiple local observing ports configured in a batch.

    NOTE:

    An observing port is dedicated to forwarding mirrored traffic. Do not configure other services on an observing port; otherwise, mirrored traffic and other service traffic interfere with each other.

  3. Bind a mirrored port to an observing port.

    1. Run the interface interface-type interface-number command to enter the interface view.

    2. Run the port-mirroring to observe-port observe-port-index { both | inbound | outbound } command to bind the mirrored port to a specified observing port.

      NOTE:
      • inbound: copies the packets received by a mirrored port to an observing port.

      • outbound: copies the packets sent by a mirrored port to an observing port.

      • both: copies the packets received and sent by a mirrored port to an observing port.

      • In 1:N mirroring, if you bind a mirrored port to multiple observing ports in a batch in either the inbound or outbound direction, the mirrored port cannot be bound to other observing ports in the same direction.

      • Both physical interfaces and Eth-Trunks can be configured as mirrored ports. If an Eth-Trunk is configured as a mirrored port, its member ports cannot be configured as observing ports.

  4. Perform steps 2 and 3 multiple times to copy packets from different mirrored ports to different observing ports. The number of observing ports is determined by the mirroring specifications.

Verifying the Configuration

  • Run the display observe-port command to check the observing port configuration.
  • Run the display port-mirroring command to check the mirroring configuration.

Configuration Tips

Restoring the default configuration of an Ethernet port or Eth-Trunk configured as an observing port

  1. Unbind the mirrored port from the observing port.

    [HUAWEI] interface gigabitethernet x/x/x
    [HUAWEI-GigabitEthernetx/x/x] undo port-mirroring to observe-port x inbound/outbound/both
    [HUAWEI-GigabitEthernetx/x/x] quit
  2. Delete the observing port configuration in the system view.

    [HUAWEI] undo observe-port x
    
  3. After steps 1 and 2 are complete, the default configuration of the Ethernet port or Eth-Trunk is restored. You can then configure other services on the Ethernet port or Eth-Trunk.
