Overview of TWAMP Light

Definition

Two-Way Active Measurement Protocol (TWAMP) Light uses a simple structure of TWAMP. Compared with the standard TWAMP structure, TWAMP Light simplifies the control protocol used to establish the performance measurement sessions. It can flexibly collect network performance indicators (delay, jitter, and packet loss rate), and is easy to deploy.

Purpose

Traditional IP networks lack an effective, simple, and universal OAM performance measurement tool. Many vendors use proprietary features to measure IP network performance, for example, Network Quality Analysis (NQA) and IP Flow Performance Monitoring (IP FPM). However, NQA is not universally supported by devices and is difficult to deploy. IP FPM has high requirements on network devices and is difficult to deploy, so it is applicable to limited scenarios. The IETF IP performance monitoring (IPPM) team proposed a series of protocols to address the issues in IP network performance measurement. TWAMP is one of the OAM performance measurement tools applied to IP networks.
