Configuring the Device to Assign IP Addresses to PPPoE Clients

Context

When the device functions as a PPPoE server, you can configure the PPPoE server to assign IP addresses to PPPoE clients using the address negotiation function of the PPP protocol.

When the hosts on the LAN function as PPPoE clients to connect to the PPPoE server, you can configure the PPPoE server to assign IP addresses to PPPoE clients using the global address pool. In this way, the hosts can quickly and dynamically obtain the IP addresses and the administrator does not need to manually configure IP addresses.

To facilitate management and lower costs of user information maintenance, more and more enterprises use RADIUS servers to uniformly manage user information. The Frame-IP attribute is configured for each PPPoE client on the RADIUS server. When a PPPoE client goes online, the planned IP address is assigned to the client by the PPPoE server.

When the device functions as a PPPoE server and the RADIUS server performs AAA authentication for a PPPoE client, you can configure the Frame-IP attribute for the PPPoE client on the RADIUS server. When the PPPoE client passes AAA authentication, the RADIUS server assigns the configured Frame-IP to the PPPoE client as the client IP address through the PPPoE server.

Procedure

  • Run system-view

    The system view is displayed.

  • Run ip pool pool-name

    A global address pool is created and the global address pool view is displayed.

  • Run network ip-address [ mask { mask | mask-length } ]

    The IP address range of the global address pool is set.

  • Run gateway-list ip-address &<1-8>

    The egress gateway address is configured for the global address pool.

  • Run quit

    Return to the system view.

  • Run interface virtual-template vt-number

    A virtual template interface is created and the virtual template interface view is displayed.

  • Run ip address ip-address { mask | mask-length }

    The PPPoE server IP address is configured.
