Configuring Terminal Type Awareness

Context

A device usually connects to many types of terminals. You may need to assign different network access rights or packet processing priorities to the terminals of different types. For example, the voice devices, such as IP phones, should be assigned a high packet processing priority because voice signals require low delay and jitter.

Using the terminal type awareness function, the device can obtain terminal types and send them to the authentication server. The authentication server then controls network access rights and policies such as packet processing priorities bases on the user terminal types.

After enabling any NAC authentication mode, the device can obtain user terminal types in either of the following modes:
  • DHCP option field mode: The device parses the required option field containing terminal type information from the received DHCP request packets. The device then sends the option field information to the RADIUS server through a RADIUS accounting packet. Before selecting the DHCP option field mode, you must enable the DHCP snooping function on the device. For details, see Enabling DHCP Snooping in "DHCP Snooping Configuration" in the S12700 V200R011C10 Configuration Guide - Security.
  • LLDP TLV type mode: The device parses the required TLV type containing terminal type information from the received LLDP packets. The device then sends the TLV type information to the RADIUS server through a RADIUS accounting packet. Before selecting the LLDP TLV type mode, you must enable the LLDP function on the device and the connected peer device. For details, see "Enabling LLDP" in "LLDP Configuration" in the S12700 V200R011C10 Configuration Guide - Network Management Configuration.
NOTE:

The terminal type awareness function takes effect only when the authentication or accounting mode in the AAA scheme is RADIUS.

The terminal type awareness function only provides a solution of obtaining user terminal types for access devices. This solution cannot identify terminal types or allocate network access policies to terminals. The administrator configures the terminal type identification function and network access policies for terminals of different types on the RADIUS server.

Procedure

  1. Run system-view

    The system view is displayed.

  2. Configure terminal type awareness.

    • Run device-sensor dhcp option option-code &<1-6>

      Terminal type awareness based on the DHCP option field is enabled.

      By default, terminal type awareness based on the DHCP option field is disabled.

    • Run device-sensor lldp tlv tlv-type &<1-4>

      LLDP-based terminal type awareness is enabled.

      By default, LLDP-based terminal type awareness is disabled.
