Command Support

Commands provided in this section and all the parameters in the commands are supported by all switch models by default, unless otherwise specified. For details, see specific commands.

display hvrp

Function

The display hvrp brief command displays brief information about HVRP.

The display hvrp local-vlan command displays information about local VLANs.

The display hvrp port-vlan command displays the VLANs allowed by an interface.

The display hvrp verbose command displays detailed information about HVRP.

The display hvrp vlan-info command displays information about a specified VLAN.

Usage Guidelines

You can run the display hvrp command to view brief information about HVRP, local VLANs, VLANs allowed by an interface, information about a specified VLAN, and detailed information about HVRP.

Whether HVRP is enabled. To enable HVRP, run the hvrp enable command.

HVRP registervlan timer

Value of the VLAN registration timer. To set the VLAN registration timer, run the hvrp timer registervlan command.

HVRP registervlan age timer

Value of the aging timer of registered VLANs. To set the aging timer of registered VLANs, run the hvrp timer registervlan-age command.

HVRP age all VLAN

Whether the function of aging all VLANs is enabled. To age all VLANs, run the hvrp vlan-age all command.

HVRP Permanent-vlan

Configuration of permanent VLANs. To configure a permanent VLAN, run the hvrp permanent-vlan command.

Mstp Role

Role of an interface on an MSTP network. The value can be:
  • disable: indicates that STP is disabled on the interface.

  • alternate: indicates the backup interface of the root interface.

  • backup: indicates the backup interface of a designated interface.

  • root: indicates the root interface.

  • designated: indicates a designated interface.

  • master: indicates the interface on the shortest path between an STP region and the Common and Internal Spanning Tree (CIST) root bridge.

HVRP MAC learning

MAC address learning mode in a VLAN.

HVRP Actual PortNum

Actual number of allowed ports in the VLAN.

Usage Guidelines

Usage Scenario

When constructing a network, users usually use the ring topology or tree topology. Regardless of topology, aggregation devices must support a large number of MAC address entries to meet requirements of downstream users. As users on the network increase quickly, MAC address entries supported by a switch may be insufficient. As a result, the switch cannot learn the MAC addresses of some users. In this case, packets of these users are broadcast in the VLAN, wasting bandwidth and deteriorating network performance.

HVRP can be used when the number of MAC address entries supported by a switch is smaller than the total number of users connected. HVRP can identify user VLANs (local VLANs) and non-user VLANs. In special networking, HVRP can dynamically register and age VLANs to save MAC address entries and increase the number of users supported by the switch.

Precautions

When enabling HVRP, pay attention to the following points:
  • When STP works in VBST mode, do not enale HVRP.
  • HVRP can be enabled only on trunk interfaces.

  • When configuring HVRP attributes on an interface, you are advised to delete the interface from VLAN 1 (default VLAN).

  • HVRP can be enabled on an interface only after it is enabled globally.

  • After HVRP is disabled globally, HVRP is disabled on all interfaces.

  • After HVRP is disabled on an interface, all HVRP-related configurations on the interface such as the HVRP timers become invalid.

  • HVRP must be used with STP or MSTP. To enable HVRP, you must enable STP or MSTP first. After HVRP is enabled, do not disable STP or MSTP.

  • After HVRP is enabled, the switch dynamically sets the MAC address learning mode for the VLAN. Therefore, you do not need to set the maximum number of MAC addresses that can be learned in the VLAN.

hvrp permanent-vlan

Function

The hvrp permanent-vlan command configures a permanent VLAN.

The undo hvrp permanent-vlan command cancels the configuration of a permanent VLAN.

By default, no VLAN is a permanent VLAN.

hvrp permanent-vlan { vlan-id1 [ to vlan-id2 ] }&<1-10>

vlan-id1 [ to vlan-id2 ]

Specifies a range of permanent VLAN IDs.
  • vlan-id1 indicates the start permanent VLAN ID.
  • vlan-id2 indicates the end permanent VLAN ID.
  • The value of vlan-id2 must be larger than the value of vlan-id1. The parameters vlan-id1 and vlan-id2 identify a range of VLANs.
You can specify a maximum of 10 VLAN ID ranges simultaneously. The ranges cannot overlap.

The value of vlan-id1 is an integer that ranges from 1 to 4094.

The value of vlan-id2 is an integer that ranges from 1 to 4094.

Usage Guidelines

Usage Scenario

A permanent VLAN is never aged by an HVRP interface.

If an HVRP interface does not receive any registration packets from a VLAN within the aging time, the VLAN is deleted from the HVRP interface. If dedicated services are configured for some VLANs and the VLANs do not need to be aged, you can configure the VLANs as permanent VLANs.

Precautions

You can configure a VLAN as a permanent VLAN only after the VLAN is created.

hvrp timer

Function

The hvrp timer registervlan command sets the VLAN registration timer.

The undo hvrp timer registervlan command restores the default value of the VLAN registration timer.

The hvrp timer registervlan-age command sets the aging timer of registered VLANs.

The undo hvrp timer registervlan-age command restores the default value of the aging timer of registered VLANs.

The default value of the VLAN registration timer is 5 seconds. The default value of the aging timer of registered VLANs is 15 seconds.

Usage Guidelines

Usage Scenario

The HVRP root interface on each switch periodically sends user VLAN registration packets according to the VLAN registration timer. HVRP interfaces that receive registration packets from user VLANs are added to the user VLANs. If an HVRP interface does not receive any registration packets from a VLAN within the aging time, the VLAN is deleted from the HVRP interface. The switch learns only MAC addresses in registered VLANs. This reduces the number of MAC addresses that the switch learns and improves the stability of the switch in network flapping.

Precautions

When setting the VLAN registration timer and the aging timer of registered VLANs, pay attention to the following points:
  • VLAN aging is implemented only on HVRP non-root interfaces. VLANs on the HVRP root interface never age out because all packets must pass through the HVRP root interface.
  • The value of the VLAN registration timer must be smaller than the value of the aging timer of registered VLANs. It is recommended that the value of the aging timer of registered VLANs be three times the value of the VLAN registration timer or larger.

  • All switches on a ring network must be configured with the same VLAN registration timer value.

  • Before setting the VLAN registration timer and the aging timer of registered VLANs, enable HVRP globally.

Function

The hvrp vlan-age all command enables the device to age all VLANs.

The undo hvrp vlan-age all command enables the device to age only the local VLANs.

By default, the device ages only the local VLANs.

Usage Guidelines

On a network with one or more rings, you can enable the device to age all VLANs or only the user VLANs.

You are advised to enable the device to age all VLANs when the device is located at the intersection point of rings.
