Usage Guidelines

HA has two working modes: Nonstop Forwarding (NSF) and Nonstop Routing (NSR). The system allows only one working mode at a time. You can run the display switchover mode command to view the running mode.

# Display the HA working mode of the system.

<HUAWEI> display switchover mode
Switchover mode: nonstop-routing.
Table 12-29  Description of the display switchover mode command output

Switchover mode

HA working mode of the system:

  • Nonstop-forwarding
  • nonstop-routing

To set the HA working mode of the system, run the switchover mode command.

switchover mode

The switchover mode command sets the High Availability (HA) working mode for the system.

The undo switchover mode command restores the default setting.

By default, the HA working mode is non-stopping forwarding (NSF).

switchover mode { nonstop-routing | nonstop-forwarding }

undo switchover mode nonstop-routing

Parameter Description Value
nonstop-routing Sets the HA working mode to non-stopping routing (NSR) for the system.

In NSR mode, the system can process routes and forward services without interruption.

nonstop-forwarding Sets the HA working mode to NSF for the system.

In NSF mode, the service interruption duration is greatly shortened.

Usage Guidelines

Usage Scenario

The system failure, software upgrade, or system maintenance may trigger an active/standby switchover on the device. In this case, you can set the HA working mode to NSF or NSR for the system to ensure nonstop service forwarding and high device reliability after the active/standby switchover of MPUs is performed.

The device has been equipped with the master and slave MPUs and the system has been in real-time backup state.

Configuration Impact

After the NSF mode is switched to the NSR mode, the system restarts the slave MPU and the master MPU backs up data to the slave MPU. During the process, other configuration operations cannot be performed.

Ensure that the network topology and interface status are unchanged during the active/standby switchover of MPUs; otherwise, service forwarding may fail.

NSR is a single-device function that does not depend on protocols. GR negotiation is performed in advance in NSR mode. Therefore, NSR is recommended.
