Clearing Password for the Console User

Clearing Password for the Console User

If you forget the passwords for logging in to the switch using telnet and console port, you cannot log in to the switch. To address this issue, the BootLoad menu provides a submenu for deleting the password for login using the console port.

You need to delete the console port login password from the system active MPU so that the password can be deleted from the device. Therefore, you are advised to delete the console port login password from all MPUs.

When two switches set up a CSS and the console port password is unknown, you can log in to the CSS only when the console port password on the master switch is cleared. When you clear the password, it is recommended that you start the two switches one by one and clear the password on each switch.

  • In the BootLoad menu, select 6 to clear the password for console users.

After the password is deleted, start the switch using option 1 in the BootLoad menu. Do not select 7 or power off the switch; otherwise, the configuration becomes invalid.

Selecting the option to clear the console port login password actually sets the authentication mode for console port login users to non-authentication. After the device restarts, you can directly log in to the device without entering the user name and password. To ensure the console port usage security, it is recommended that you change the authentication mode for console port login users to AAA authentication after logging in to the device.
