Setting the Network Diameter


Any two terminals on a switching network are connected through a specific path along which multiple devices are located. The network diameter is the maximum number of devices between any two terminals. A larger network diameter indicates a larger network scale.

An improper network diameter may cause slow network convergence and affect communication. Setting a proper network diameter according to the network scale helps speed up network convergence.

The switch calculates the Forward Delay, Hello time, and Max-Age based on the configured network diameter. It is recommended that you set the network diameter to configure timers.


  1. Run system-view

    The system view is displayed.

  2. Run stp vlan { vlan-id1 [ to vlan-id2 ] } &<1-10> bridge-diameter diameter

    A network diameter is set.

    By default, the network diameter is 7.

    • Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) uses a single spanning tree instance on the entire network. As a result, performance deteriorates when the network scale grows. Therefore, the network diameter cannot be larger than 7.

    • It is recommended that all devices on a ring network use the same network diameter.
