Why Are Some Ping Packets Discarded by the Switch?

Why Are Some Ping Packets Discarded by the Switch?

A ping operation uses ICMP packets. During a ping operation, the switch sends the ICMP packets at the rate below the default CAR to the CPU, and discards the ICMP packets at the rate exceeding the CAR. The switch uses this method to prevent excessive ICMP packets from impacting the CPU.

If some ICMP packets from another device to the local switch are lost, run the display cpu-defend statistics packet-type icmp all command to check ICMP packet statistics on the switch.
<HUAWEI> display cpu-defend statistics packet-type icmp all
 Statistics on slot 0:
Packet Type Pass(Packet/Byte) Drop(Packet/Byte) Last-dropping-time
icmp 0 0 -
                                     0 0
The Drop(Packet/Byte) field indicates the number of discarded packets. If many packets are discarded, the CAR cannot meet requirement. Run the car packet-type icmp cir cir-value [ cbs cbs-value ] command to increase the CAR for ICMP packets.
