SmartTier Feature Guide for Block

This document is applicable to OceanStor 5110 V5, 5300 V5, 5500 V5, 5600 V5, 5800 V5, 6800 V5, 18500 V5, and 18800 V5. This document describes the working principle and application scenarios of the SmartTier (for block) feature. It also explains how to configure and manage the feature.

Storage Pool-Level Management

The tasks of the storage pool-level management are setting RAID policies and data relocation granularities, viewing the capacities of storage pools, setting Data Migration Plan, viewing the information of storage tiers, enabling the Forecast Analysis, and enabling the I/O monitoring.

Table 3-2 details these management tasks.

Setting a RAID Policy and a Data Migration granularity

Set a RAID policy for each storage tier and a Data Migration granularity for a storage pool when creating the pool. These two parameter values cannot be changed after being set. Also set a RAID policy for any new storage tier added into the storage pool.

Viewing the Capacity of a Storage Pool

View the used and free capacities of a storage pool, and the capacities of its storage tiers.

Enabling the I/O Monitoring

Specify the days and hours during which you want to run the I/O monitoring. Enable the I/O monitoring before relocating data among storage tiers or viewing the capacity policy of a storage tier. And enable it when you want to use the SmartTier to manage storage.

Setting a Data Migration Plan

Set the Data Migration Plan to manual or automatic. Enable the service monitoring if you allow data to be relocated among all tiers. Set the Data Migration Plan when you are creating a storage pool and want to use the SmartTier to manage storage.

Viewing the Information of Storage Tiers

View the Estimated Move-up Data, Estimated Move-down Data, total and used capacities of each storage tier.

Enabling the Forecast Analysis

Enable the Forecast Analysis to view the capacity policy of each storage tier. Enable the service monitoring first and then the Forecast Analysis. Enable the Forecast Analysis when you want to use the SmartTier to manage storage.

SSD Cache

The SSD cache mode can monitor storage pools on a 7x24 basis and dramatically reduce the data analysis period to identify and transfer hotspot data quickly and improve the access efficiency of hotspot data.

The following introduces how to complete these management tasks.

Setting a RAID Policy and a Data Migration granularity

Set a RAID policy when you are creating a storage pool or adding a storage tier into a pool. The set value cannot be changed.

Define the data migration granularity when creating a storage pool. The set value cannot be changed.

  1. On the Provisioning page, click Storage Pool to go to the storage pool management page.
  2. Click Create to go to the wizard for creating a storage pool. In the Set Storage Layer Information step, set the RAID policy and Data Migration granularity for the storage tiers.
  3. Click the storage tier that you want to set, and select a RAID policy from the RAID policy list.
  4. In the figure above, click Set SmartTier Policy to set Service Monitoring Period and Data Migration Plan. If Data Migration Plan is set to Periodical, I/Os are monitored on a 7x24 basis by default.
  5. Click Advanced. In the dialog box that is displayed, set the Data Migration granularity.
NOTE:
  • In the process of creating the storage pool, if two or three tiers are created, the wizard guides you through setting the Data Migration Plan.
  • In the process of creating the storage pool, if only one tier is created, the SmartTier is disabled. If you want to enable the SmartTier, expand the storage pool to two or three tiers.
  • On the storage pool management page, select a storage pool, and click Expand to expand the capacity of the pool. If you want to add another storage tier to expand the capacity, set a RAID policy for the tier.

Viewing the Capacity of a Storage Pool

On the SmartTier page, right-click a storage pool (for example, StoragePool001), and choose Properties from the shortcut menu. The Storage Pool Properties page is displayed. Click the General tab to view the general properties of the storage pool.

In the Capacity area, the used and free capacities of StoragePool001 and the capacity of each storage tier are displayed. Move the mouse pointer over a colored area that represents a capacity, a message is displayed indicating the total capacity and the percentage of the used capacity. For example, the message for StoragePool001 is High-performance Tier (SSD): 1.000 TB.

Setting a Data Migration Plan

Set the Data Migration Plan when you are creating a storage pool and want to use the SmartTier to manage storage.

On the Storage Pool Properties page, click the SmartTier Policy tab to go to the Data Migration Plan page.

In the Data Migration Plan area, set the mode to manual or automatic. The manual mode allows you to initiate data relocation at any time you want. The automatic mode enables the storage system to initiate data relocation at a preset time. The value of Start time can be any time from 00:00 to 23:59. The maximum value of Duration is 24 hours.

Viewing the Information of Storage Tiers

On the Storage Pool Properties page, click the SmartTier Status tab to view the information of storage tiers in the storage pool.

The Storage Layer Status area of the previous figure shows the relocation information of storage tiers in StoragePool001:

  • The value of SmartTier feature status is Active, indicating that the storage system has obtained the SmartTier license.
  • Relocation status indicates the current SmartTier relocation status. The possible values are Ready, Relocating, and Paused.
  • Estimated Move-down Data specifies the amount of data that is to be demoted to the performance tier or the capacity tier.
  • Estimated Move-up Data specifies the amount of data that is to be promoted to the high-performance tier or the performance tier.
  • Estimated Data Relocation Duration specifies the data relocation duration.

In the previous figure, the Capacity Information area lists all the storage tiers in StoragePool001, the data amounts to be moved up and to be moved down, the total capacity and used capacity of each storage tier.

Enabling the Forecast Analysis

Enable the Forecast Analysis when you want to use the SmartTier to manage storage. Note that the analysis result can be obtained only after the Start I/O monitoring (recommended) is chosen and a valid monitoring period has been set in the SmartTier Policy tab.

On the Storage Pool Properties page, click the Forecast Analysis tab to view the information of the Forecast Analysis.

Select Enable, select a hard disk type and a RAID policy for each storage tier, and click Apply. Then click Result to view the recommended capacity proportion that balances between cost and performance. You can configure a capacity for each storage tier based on the proportion.

It takes some time for the system to get the Analysis Result. The needed time depends on the Service Monitoring Period in the Advanced tab. For example, if the monitor starts at 00:00 daily, and ends at 04:00, the Analysis Result of the day will be available at 04:00.

Enabling the I/O Monitoring

Enable the I/O monitoring before relocating data among storage tiers or viewing the capacity policy of a storage tier. And enable it when you want to use the SmartTier to manage storage.

On the Storage Pool Properties page, click the SmartTier Policy tab to go to the Service Monitoring Period page.

In the Service Monitoring Period area, set the days and hours during which you want to run the service monitoring. The value of Start time can be any time from 00:00 to 23:59. The maximum value of Duration is 24 hours.

The previous figure shows that Service Monitoring Period of StoragePool001 is 7x24 hours.

SSD Cache

The SSD cache mode is a special SmartTier configuration policy. It is recommended that you enable this mode if you want to migrate a large volume of hotspot data that changes frequently when host services have no obvious peak or off-peak hours. After this mode is enabled, it can monitor storage pools on a 24/7 basis and analyze hotspot data every 15 minutes to identify and transfer hotspot data quickly and improve the access efficiency of hotspot data.

The SSD cache mode applies to a single storage pool and works in the following two states:

  • Enabled: The storage system monitors services on a 24/7 basis and identifies and transfers hotspot data quickly. The hotspot access efficiency is greatly improved. In this mode, users cannot set Service Monitoring Period and Data Migration Plan.
NOTE:

Before enabling the SSD cache mode, ensure that the following conditions are met:

  • The storage pool has a high-performance tier.
  • The data migration plan is set to Periodical.
  • The storage pool usage is Block Storage Service.
  • Disabled: Users can set Service Monitoring Period and Data Migration Plan.

On the Storage Pool Properties page, click the SmartTier Policy tab to go to the Service Monitoring Period page.
