LUN-Level Management

LUN-Level Management

The tasks of the LUN-level management are setting initial capacity allocation policies and setting SmartTier policies.

Table 3-3 details these management tasks.

Table 3-3 LUN-level management tasks

Task

Description

Setting an Initial Capacity Allocation Policy

An initial capacity allocation policy specifies the location on a LUN in which new data is initially stored. Set an initial capacity allocation policy when creating a LUN. The policy cannot be changed after being set.

Setting a SmartTier Policy

A SmartTier policy specifies the direction in which data is preferentially relocated. Set a SmartTier policy when creating a LUN or when you want to use the SmartTier to manage storage. Take the initial capacity allocation policy into consideration to set an optimal SmartTier policy.

The following introduces how to complete these management tasks.

Setting an Initial Capacity Allocation Policy

Set an initial capacity allocation policy when creating a LUN. The policy cannot be changed after being set.

On the storage pool management page, right-click the storage pool (StoragePool001 for example) to which you want to add a LUN. Choose Create LUN from the shortcut menu. The Create LUN dialog box is displayed.

Click Advanced, and set Properties for the LUN.

NOTE:

On the Tuning tab page in the Advanced window, you can also set a SmartTier policy for the LUN.

Setting a SmartTier Policy

Set a SmartTier policy when creating a LUN or when you want to use the SmartTier to manage storage.

On the storage pool management page, click the storage pool (StoragePool001 for example) that you want to manage. The LUNs existing in the storage pool are displayed in the Details area. Right-click the LUN for which you want to set a SmartTier policy, and choose Properties from the shortcut menu. On the LUN Properties page that is displayed, click the SmartTier Information tab.

In the SmartTier Policy area, set a SmartTier policy for the LUN.

The Capacity Distribution area shows the distribution of the LUN capacity on all storage tiers.

NOTE:

On the Provisioning management page, click LUN. All LUNs existing in the storage system are displayed. Select a LUN, right-click the LUN for which you want to set a SmartTier policy, and choose Properties from the shortcut menu. On the Properties of LUN page that is displayed, set a SmartTier policy for the LUN.
