Enabling the Forecast Analysis

The storage system-resident forecast analysis function collects performance data of a storage pool to analyze the balance of workloads at a LUN level. This helps provide an optimal tier capacity policy model that takes both performance and cost into consideration. Then users can reallocate disks among all storage tiers based on the capacity policy. Note that the I/O monitoring function must be enabled if you want to view the tier capacity policy.

  • Enable the forecast analysis function 24 hours after a storage system is initially configured to collect sufficient I/O monitoring data.


The total capacity of a storage pool is the sum capacity of all storage tiers.

The ideal tier capacity policy divides the capacities of the three storage tiers in a 1:1:1 ratio. This allows a relocation of 100% data from one storage tier to another. However, this ideal policy is not practical because of certain limitations.

Under certain circumstances, it is necessary to limit the capacity of a high-performance tier. That limit can prevent a single application from using up all SSD resources. Therefore, a capacity policy with a small portion of high-performance tier is recommended. Under other circumstances, when an application becomes inactive within a short period of time, the storage system identifies the application's data as cold data and demotes it to the capacity tier. Then when the application becomes active again, the application data can use only the performance of the lowest-priority storage tier. Therefore, a capacity policy with a small portion of capacity storage tier is recommended.

An optimal tier capacity policy well balances workloads within a storage pool. The imbalance of workloads will result in an imbalanced use of data: A small portion of data in the storage pool is overloaded to serve most of the workloads.


  1. Go to the Storage Pool page.

    1. On the right navigation bar, click .

      The Provisioning page is displayed.

    2. On the page, click Storage Pool.

      The Storage Pool management page is displayed.

  2. Enable forecast analysis.

    1. On the storage pool management page, select the storage pool to be monitored and click Properties. The Properties of Storage Pool dialog box is displayed.
    2. In the Properties of Storage Pool dialog box, click Forecast Analysis.
    3. On the Forecast Analysis page, select Enable.
    4. Click OK. The forecast analysis function is successfully enabled.

Follow-up Procedure

You can click Result on the Forecast Analysis page to view the storage tier capacity policy template of a storage pool. Figure 2-3 is an example of the tier capacity policy. This example lists the recommended capacity percentage, IOPS, and bandwidth of each storage tier. You can modify storage tier configurations based on the policy model.
