Configuring an Initial Capacity Allocation Policy

An initial capacity allocation policy specifies the storage tier to which first written data is allocated. You can select an appropriate allocation policy based on service requirements.

Context

The object of this parameter is a single LUN in a storage pool. This parameter value cannot be changed after being set. Initial capacity allocation policies iare as follows:

  • Automatic allocation: enables the storage system to distribute new data to the performance tier, capacity tier, and then the high-performance tier in sequence.
  • Allocate from the high-performance tier first: enables the storage system to distribute new data to the high-performance tier first, and only relocates data to other storage tiers when the capacity of the high-performance tier is insufficient.

    During LUN creation, storage space is directly allocated to the high-performance tier and is allocated to other storage tiers only when the capacity of the high-performance tier is insufficient. This policy applies to scenarios where a large amount of data needs to be written to the storage pool or LUNs have demanding performance requirements and in the mean time, the data relocation policy applies to automatic relocation or no relocation. When the capacity of the high-performance tier is used up and the capacity of the performance tier and capacity tier is being used, stop the writes of new data and start manual data relocation. In this way, data blocks can be distributed among all storage tiers, and the capacity of the high-performance tier can be freed up to a certain extent. After all data has been written into the storage pool, you are advised to adjust the data relocation policy based on LUNs' performance requirements and application environment.

  • Allocate from the performance tier first: enables the storage system to distribute new data to the performance tier first, and only relocates data to other storage tiers when the capacity of the performance tier is insufficient.

    During LUN creation, storage space is directly allocated to the performance tier and is allocated to other storage tiers only when the capacity of the performance tier is insufficient. This policy applies to LUNs that have demanding performance requirements and in the mean time, the data relocation policy applies to data relocation to the high-performance tier.

  • Allocate from the capacity tier first: enables the storage system to distribute new data to the capacity tier first, and only relocates data to other storage tiers when the capacity of the capacity tier is insufficient.

    During LUN creation, storage space is directly allocated to the capacity tier and is allocated to other storage tiers only when the capacity of the capacity tier is insufficient. This policy is recommended for LUNs insensitive to performance and in the mean time, the data relocation policy applies to data relocation to the low-performance tier.

Automatic allocation is the default policy.

Procedure

  1. Go to the Storage Pool page.

    1. On the right navigation bar, click .

      The Provisioning page is displayed.

    2. On the page, click Storage Pool.

      The Storage Pool management page is displayed.

  2. Set an initial capacity allocation policy.

    1. On the storage pool management page, select a storage pool and click More > Create LUN.

      The Create LUN dialog box is displayed.

    2. In the Create LUN dialog box, click Advanced.

      The page for setting advanced properties for a LUN is displayed.

    3. On the Properties tab page, set an initial capacity allocation policy for the LUN.
    4. Click OK.

      The initial capacity allocation policy is configured.
