After SmartTier

Total amount of stored data

1 TB, of which 50% is cold data (data that is accessed infrequently)

Required disk types

SSDs, costing about 20 USD per GB

  • SSDs, costing about 20 USD per GB
  • NL-SAS disks, costing about 10 USD per GB

Total procurement cost

About 20,000 USD

About 15,000 USD

After using SmartTier, enterprise A reduced its disk procurement costs by 25%. As shown in Figure 1-5, if the percentage of cold data increases, further savings on disk procurement costs can be made.

Since cold data is stored on NL-SAS disks, high-performance SSDs are freed up for hot data, providing hot data with a fast response and high IOPS. As a result, the overall storage system performance is improved.
