Monitoring Application Performance (Applicable to 5000/5000F/6000/6000F/5x10/5x10F Series)
The storage system's built-in performance monitoring function provides visibility into object performance. This function helps you know the service level agreement (SLA) requirement of each application and adjust the performance goals of SmartQoS accordingly, thereby ensuring performance of critical services.
Procedure
- Enable and set performance monitoring.
- Choose
Settings >
Monitor Settings.
- Select Parameter Settings and set performance monitoring parameters, as follows:
If Status of performance monitoring is Enabled, click Disable before you set the following parameters.
- In Sampling Interval of Real-Time Statistics Collection (s), set the interval for sampling performance data.
- In Sampling Interval of Historical Statistics Collection (s), set the duration of performance monitoring.
- Select Save monitoring data on the device.
- Click Enable to enable performance monitoring.
The Execution Result dialog box is displayed.
- Click Close.
Status of the performance monitoring function changes to Enabled.
- Choose
- For a version earlier than V500R007C60SPC200, monitor LUN or file system service performance as follows:
- Choose
Monitor >
Performance Monitoring.
- On the Performance Monitoring page, set the objects that you want to monitor.
- In the Object Type list of the Monitored Object area, choose LUN or File System.
- Select the LUNs or file systems that you want to monitor.
The data of an application resides on one or more LUNs or file systems. To monitor the performance of an application, you are advised to choose all the LUNs or file systems that store the data of the specific application.
- In Statistical Indicators, select indicators that you want to monitor.
- When Object Type is LUN, you are advised to select Block Bandwidth or Total IOPS (IO/s). Selected indicators are displayed on the right function.
- When Object Type is File system, you are advised to select Read bandwidth, Write bandwidth, Read OPS, or Write OPS. Selected indicators are displayed on the right pane.
- In the left of the Performance Monitoring page, you can select
to view the performance statistics of specific objects on a single chart.
- In the left of the Performance Monitoring page, you can select
to view the performance statistics of specific objects on multiple charts.
- If you view the performance statistics of specific objects on a single chart, choose Advanced items from Data Type list to get a more accurate performance monitoring result.
- If you view the performance statistics of specific objects on a single chart, in the Percentage (%) list of the performance statistics of specific objects on a single chart page, set a scale to display the performance monitoring result.
- In the left of the Performance Monitoring page, you can select
- Choose
- For V500R007C60SPC200 and later versions, monitor LUN or file system service performance as follows:
- Choose
Monitor >
Performance Monitoring.
- Click Monitor.
The Monitoring Panel page is displayed.
- On the Monitoring Panel page, set the objects that you want to monitor.
- Select LUN or File system from the navigation tree on the left.
- In the middle pane, select the LUNs or file systems that you want to monitor.
The data of an application resides on one or more LUNs or file systems. To monitor the performance of an application, you are advised to choose the LUNs or file systems that store the data of the specific application in this step.
- In the right pane, select indicators that need to be monitored.
- If LUNs are monitored, you are advised to select Block Bandwidth or Total IOPS (IO/s).
- If file systems are monitored, you are advised to select Read bandwidth, Write bandwidth, Read OPS or Write OPS.
- Click Start Monitoring.
- View performance monitoring data in performance line graphs.
- When you place the cursor on a performance data sampling point, the statistic value and sampling time are displayed.
- The values displayed at sampling points have been converted for better understanding. The values displayed in statistical charts or zoom ratios have not been converted.
- You can click
or
on the upper right corner to switch the view.
- You can click
on the upper right corner of the line graph and select an area in the graph to zoom in. Then, you can click
to restore the zoomed-in area or click
to restore to the default view.
- Choose
Result
The LUN or file system performance is displayed in the function pane as graphs.
By monitoring LUN or file system performance, you can see how each application occupies storage system resources. Based on the monitoring result, you can determine whether the performance of an application at the current time or during a certain period is lower or higher than the preset performance goal.
- If the performance is lower than the goal, you can use SmartQoS to limit the performance of other applications.
- If the performance is higher than the goal, you can use SmartQoS to limit the performance of this application.
