Modifying a SmartDedupe or SmartCompression Policy

This operation allows you to modify the data compression and deduplication policy of a thin LUN.


At least one thin LUN has been created and the SmartDedupe license file is imported.


  • SmartDedupe is a value-added feature. It is license controlled, and is available only after the license is imported. This feature provides data deduplication and compression functions. Differences between the two functions are as follows:
    • Data compression recodes data to reduce its redundancy and thereby saves storage space.
    • Data deduplication deletes duplicate data blocks and retains only one copy of repetitive data blocks to improve space utilization.
  • The two functions only apply to thin LUNs and are unavailable to thick LUNs. By default, the two functions are disabled.
  • Data compression or deduplication is only performed on newly written data after being enabled. Existing data can neither be compressed nor deduplicated.

Data compression is not applicable to the following types of data:

  • Non-repetitive archive data, such as image files and encryption data
  • Data that has been compressed or encrypted by hardware devices or applications (such as backup and archiving applications)


  1. Log in to DeviceManager.
  2. Go to the LUN page.

    The operation path varies with user types:

    • System user: Click vStore, select the desired vStore, and click Details to go to the vStore view. Choose Provisioning > LUN.
    • vStore user: In the vStore view, choose Provisioning > LUN.

  3. Select a thin LUN whose SmartDedupe policy you want to modify and click Properties.

    The Properties of LUN dialog box is displayed.

  4. Choose More > SmartDedupe&SmartCompression.

    The SmartDedupe&SmartCompression page is displayed.

  5. Modify data compression and deduplication policies.

    Table 5-1 describe the related parameters.

    Storage space that the data occupies before using compression and deduplication.

    Enable data compression

    After you select Enable data compression, the SmartCompression policy is enabled.

    Saved Space after Compression

    Size of storage space saved by the compression of data written to the LUN. The unit is MB (%).


    MB: indicates the saved storage space.

    %: indicates the percentage of the size of compressed data in the total size of data written to the LUN.

    Enable deduplication

    After you select Enable deduplication, the SmartDedupe policy is enabled.

    Saved Space after Deduplication

    Size of storage space saved by the deduplication of data written to the LUN. The unit is MB (%).


    MB: indicates the saved storage space.

    %: indicates the percentage of the size of deduplicated data in the total size of data written to the LUN.

  6. Confirm that data compression and deduplication policies are successfully modified.

    1. Click OK.

      The Execution Result dialog box is displayed.

    2. Click Close to finish modifying data compression and deduplication policies.
