This document is applicable to OceanStor 5110 V5, 5300 V5, 5500 V5, 5600 V5, 5800 V5, 6800 V5, 18500 V5, and 18800 V5 storage systems. It describes the implementation principles and application scenarios of the SmartCache feature. Also, it explains how to configure and manage SmartCache.

Creating a SmartCache Partition

Creating a SmartCache Partition

This operation enables you to create required SmartCache partitions.

Prerequisites

The license for SmartCache has been imported.

Context

SmartCache Partition is a property of SmartCache. SmartCache employs SmartCache Pool and SmartCache Partition to manage SSD resources. The relationship between SmartCache Pool and SmartCache Partition is as follows:

  • The storage system creates a default SmartCache pool on each controller. A SmartCache partition allocates SSD resources in a SmartCache pool to achieve cache resource isolation. LUNs or file systems use their dedicated SmartCache partitions for read acceleration. The storage system creates a default SmartCache partition on each engine. In addition to the default SmartCache partition, each engine supports a maximum of eight user-defined partitions.
  • The actual capacity of a partition is determined by the expected capacity and the total capacity of the SmartCache pool. You can only change the expected capacity of a user-defined partition, but cannot change the expected capacity of a default partition. In addition, the expected capacity of the default partition and user-defined partition must comply with the following principles:
    • If no user-defined partition is created, the expected capacity of the default partition is the nominal capacity sum of SmartCache pools on the engine to which the default partition belongs.
    • If a user-defined partition is created, the expected capacity of the default partition = The nominal capacity sum of SmartCache pools on the engine to which the default partition belongs – The expected capacity sum of all user-defined partitions on the engine. In addition, the sum of the expected capacity of all user-defined partitions belonging to the same engine cannot be greater than fifty percent of the sum of SmartCache pools' nominal capacity on the engine.
  • SmartCache partitions must belong to the same engine as LUNs or file systems to be accelerated.

Procedure

  1. Log in to DeviceManager.
  2. Choose Provisioning > Resource Performance Tuning > SmartCache > SmartCache Partition.
  3. Click Create.

    The Create SmartCache Partition Wizard dialog box is displayed.

  4. In the Name and Description text boxes, name and describe the SmartCache partition.

    Table 2-1 describes related parameters.

    • The name must be unique.

    Description of the SmartCache partition.

    The description contains 0 to 255 characters.

  5. Set properties for the SmartCache partition.

    1. On the Set Name page, click Next.

      The Set Properties page is displayed.

    2. Set Engine and Expected Capacity for the SmartCache Partition.

      Table 2-2 describes related parameters.

  6. Optional: Click Next. On the Select LUNs page that is displayed, select the LUN that corresponds to the SmartCache partition.

    NOTE:

    The selected LUN must belong to the same engine as the SmartCache partition.

  7. Optional: Click Next. On the Select File Systems page that is displayed, select the file system that corresponds to the SmartCache partition.

    NOTE:

    The selected file system must belong to the same engine as the SmartCache partition.

  8. Confirm that you want to create the SmartCache partition.

    1. Click Next.

      The Summary page is displayed.

    2. Confirm the SmartCache partition information.
      • If the SmartCache partition information is correct, click Finish.

        The Execution Result dialog box is displayed indicating the SmartCache partition is successfully created. Click Close.

      • If the SmartCache partition information is incorrect, click Previous to reset the information.
