Expanding the Capacity of LUNs in a Remote Replication Pair

When the capacity of LUNs is insufficient for service data, you can expand the capacity of LUNs in remote replication pairs to meet service requirements.

Expanding the Capacity of LUNs in a Remote Replication Pair (Applicable to V500R00710/V500R007C20)

The capacity of LUNs in a remote replication pair that has been split can be expanded.

Prerequisites
  • The communication is normal between the two storage systems in the remote replication relationship.
  • The two storage systems in the remote replication relationship support capacity expansion in split state.
  • The LUNs for which you want to expand capacity are in normal state.
  • The storage pool where the primary and secondary LUNs reside has sufficient space.
Context

Capacity must be expanded for both the primary and secondary LUNs. The primary and secondary LUNs should have the same capacity after the expansion.

Procedure
  1. Split the remote replication pair.

    NOTE:

    If the remote replication pair for which you want to perform capacity expansion has been added to a consistency group, split the consistency group first and synchronize the consistency group manually after the capacity expansion.

  2. Expand the capacity of the primary LUN and the secondary LUN respectively.

    NOTE:

    For details about how to expansion the capacity of a LUN, see Expanding a LUN on the Storage System in the Administrator Guide of the corresponding product model.

  3. Scan for the primary LUN on the host.
  4. Synchronize the data in the remote replication pair manually.

Expanding the Capacity of LUNs in a Remote Replication Pair (Applicable to V500R007C30 and Later)

In a remote replication pair, the capacity of a LUN on the remote storage device can be accordingly expanded by expanding the capacity of the other LUN on the local storage device.

Prerequisites
  • Pair Running Status of the remote replication pair is Normal, Synchronizing, Split, or Standby, and Pair Health Status is Normal.
  • Health Status of each LUN is Normal.
  • The links between the two storage systems of the remote replication pair are normal.
  • The version of the remote storage device is later than or the same as that of the local storage device.
Context
  • When LUNs of different types are expanded, the capacity that can be expanded is restricted. Specific conditions are as follows:
    • The capacity of a thin LUN is restricted by its specifications but not confined to the remaining capacity of the storage pool.
    • The capacity of a thick LUN is restricted by its specifications. It cannot be larger than the remaining capacity of the storage pool.
  • If the capacity of member LUNs of a remote replication pair needs to be expanded, expand both the local and remote LUNs. If the remote LUN has remote replication relationships with other LUNs, only the capacity of the local LUN is expanded. To expand the capacity of the remote LUN, log in to the remote device and expand the capacity of the remote LUN.
Procedure
  1. Expand either LUN (primary LUN or secondary LUN).

    NOTE:

    This operation can be performed on either storage system in the remote replication relationship.

    1. Choose Provisioning > LUN.
    2. Select the LUN that you want to expand and click Expand.

      The Expand LUN dialog box is displayed.

    3. Authenticate the remote device.

      If you log out of the storage device and log in again, you must authenticate the remote device.

      1. Click Authenticate below Remote Device.

        The Remote Device Authentication dialog box is displayed.

      2. Specify Username and Password of the remote device, and select an authentication mode in Authentication Mode. Click OK.

        The Success dialog box is displayed, indicating that the authentication succeeded.

      3. Click OK.
    4. In Added Capacity, specify the capacity that you want to add.
    5. Confirm the LUN expansion.
      1. Click OK.

        The security alert dialog box is displayed.

        NOTE:

        If the LUN to be expanded is a member LUN in a remote replication pair, capacity expansion will split the remote replication pair.

      2. Confirm the information in the dialog box. Select I have read and understand the consequences associated with performing this operation. Click OK.

        The Execution Result dialog box is displayed.

      3. Click Close.

  2. Scan for the primary LUN on the host.
  3. Synchronize the data in the remote replication pair manually.
