Configuring Basic Storage Services for VMware VVol

Configuring Basic Storage Services for VMware VVol

VVol is a new function in VMware ESXi 6.0. This section describes how to configure basic storage services for VMware VVol.

Prerequisites

Corresponding license authorization has been obtained. For details about how to obtain license authorization, see "License Requirements" in the Quick Guide (VASA2.0).

NOTE:

To obtain the manual, log in to https://support.huawei.com/enterprise/. In the search field, enter eSDK Enterprise Storage Plugins. Select the path that is automatically associated with this parameter. Go to the documentation page to download the Quick Guide (VASA2.0) of the required version.

Configuration Process

Procedure

  1. Log in to DeviceManager.

    NOTE:

For details about the following basic storage service configurations, refer to "Configuring Basic Storage Services" in this document.

  2. Create a disk domain.
  3. Create a storage pool.
  4. Create a PE LUN.

    NOTE:

By default, Use Type is not displayed. Click All options to display Use Type and set it to PE LUN.

  5. Create a LUN group.
  6. Create a host.
  7. Create a host group.
  8. Optional: Create a port group.
  9. Create a mapping view.
  10. Configure the connectivity between a host and a storage system. For details, see the Huawei SAN Storage Host Connectivity Guide for VMware ESXi.
  11. Configure the VVol function by following instructions in the eSDK Storage VASA manual.

    NOTE:

To obtain the manual, log in to https://support.huawei.com/enterprise/. In the search field, enter eSDK Enterprise Storage Plugins. Select the path that is automatically associated with the keywords. Go to the documentation page to download the Quick Guide (VASA2.0) of the required version.

    1. Install the VASA Provider.
    2. Register the storage system in eSDK and configure a storage container.
    3. Register VASA Provider in vCenter.

  12. Use a virtual datastore to create a VM.

    1. Log in to vSphere Web Client.
    2. In VM Storage Policies, configure data service rules.
    3. If the vCenter is newly built, you need to create a data center.
    4. In the vCenter, click Storage, right-click the vCenter data center, and choose Related Objects > Datastores > . Create a datastore whose type is VVOL.

    5. Right-click the vCenter data center, choose New Virtual Machine > New Virtual Machine, and select an appropriate VM storage policy and a VVol datastore to create a VM.

Follow-up Procedure

After creating a VM, you can find the following information when checking the storage system:

  • If the VM is powered off, a data VVol LUN and a configuration VVol LUN are generated on the storage array. The configuration VVol LUN is a 4 GB thin VVol LUN.
  • If the VM is powered on, another memory VVol LUN is generated. This VVol LUN is a thick VVol LUN and has the same memory size as the VM.
