OceanStor 5000, 5000F, 6000, and 6000F V5 Series V500R007

This document is applicable to OceanStor 5110 V5, 5110F V5, 5300 V5, 5300F V5, 5500 V5, 5500F V5, 5600 V5, 5600F V5, 5800 V5, 5800F V5, 6800 V5, and 6800F V5 storage systems. It describes hardware installation of those storage systems for helping you easily and quickly finish the installation.

Expanding Controllers Using SmartKit (Switch-Connection Network)

This section describes how to use SmartKit to expand controllers. It applies when a 2 U/3 U storage device is configured with two or four controller enclosures (with four or eight controllers) or when a 6 U storage device is configured with two controller enclosures (with six or eight controllers).

Prerequisites

  • C versions of the controller enclosures to be added for expansion and the original storage system are consistent.
  • The memory sizes of the controller enclosures to be added for expansion are the same as those of the original storage system's controller enclosures.
  • SmartKit has loaded the expansion tool kit.
  • Controller enclosures have been powered on. Before powering on a controller enclosure, ensure that the disk and controller separation architecture (the controller enclosure does not have disk slots) is cascaded with a configuration disk enclosure (the disk enclosure with coffer disk identifiers).
  • The system network has been connected based on the controller expansion scenario.
  • The management port IP address of controller enclosure 0 has been modified. For details, see Changing IP Addresses of Management Network Ports Using a Serial Port.
NOTE:

Before using SmartKit to configure switches, ensure that the IP addresses of the management network ports on the switches and the original storage system reside on the same network. Change IP addresses if necessary to prevent IP address conflicts.

  • There are no critical or major alarms in the storage system.
  • The public/private key pair and the password of ibc_os_hs are the default values.
  • If the mode of the SmartIO interface module is set to Cluster on the software interface, configure the SmartIO interface module with 10 Gbit/s optical modules. V500R007C30 also supports 25 Gbit/s optical modules.

Precautions

Procedure

  1. Set the SmartIO interface module to the Cluster mode. For details, see (Optional) Checking and Setting the Working Mode of SmartIO Interface Modules.
  2. Open SmartKit.
  3. Add the storage system to SmartKit.

    1. In the main window of SmartKit, click the Device Management tab and select Add.

      The dialog box to add devices is displayed.

    2. In Basic Information, select Specify IP Address (add a device by the IP address) and enter the management IP address of the storage system. Then click Next.
    3. In Config Information, enter the user name and password of the storage system administrator and click Finish.
    NOTE:
    • When a device is added for the first time or a device certificate is not trusted, a message is displayed, indicating that the connection is not trusted.
    • When an SSH server is added for the first time or after the fingerprint of an SSH server changes, a prompt asks you whether you want to continue to register the SSH server.

  4. In the main window of SmartKit, choose Home > Storage > Expansion > Expand Controllers.

    The Expand Controllers page is displayed.

  5. Safety operation guide.

    1. Click Safety Operation Guide. The Safety Operation Guide dialog box is displayed.
    2. Make sure that the prerequisites displayed on the user interface have been prepared. Select the prerequisites and click Confirm.

  6. Select devices.

    1. Click Select Devices. The Select Devices dialog box is displayed.
    2. Select the storage system for which you want to expand controllers, and the folder to save results, and click OK.

  7. Evaluate capacity expansion.

    1. Click Expansion Evaluation. The evaluation tool page is displayed.
    2. For details about how to perform expansion evaluation operations, see Online Help in SmartKit.

  8. Open the Add Controller Wizard dialog box.

    1. Click Expansion.
    2. Click Add Controller.

      The Select Expansion Mode dialog box is displayed.

    3. Select Switch-based network and 4 controllers respectively for Networking Mode and Configuration, and click OK.

      The Add Controller Wizard dialog box is displayed.

    NOTE:
    • For an expansion to six controllers, select 6 controllers in Configuration.
    • For an expansion to eight controllers, select 8 controllers in Configuration.

  9. Expand the capacity based on the wizard for adding controllers.

    1. Confirm the precautions.

      Confirm the information in Observe the following precautions and select I have read the previous information and understood consequences of the operation. Then click Next.

      The Check Capacity Expansion Conditions page is displayed.

    2. The system automatically checks the capacity expansion requirements.

      The tool automatically checks the capacity expansion requirements to ensure that the capacity of the system can be expanded. If the pre-expansion check fails, rectify the faults and perform the check again.

      After all check items are passed, click Next.

      The Initialize Networking Environment page is displayed.

    3. Click Check the network diagram, Initial switch configuration, or Manual switch configuration to obtain the network cabling and switch, and confirm that the onsite network environment meets the controller expansion requirements.
    4. After confirmation, select the expansion operation items that have been completed and I have read the previous information and understood consequences of the operation, and click Next.

      The Configure Data Switch dialog box is displayed.

    5. Enter the configuration information of the data switches and click OK. SmartKit completes the configuration automatically. Table 11-1 describes related parameters.

      Data switch 0 Management IP Address

      IP address of the management network port on data switch 0.

      Data switch 0 Username

      User name used to log in to data switch 0 through SSH. For details about the user name, see (Optional) Configuring New IP Addresses for the Management Network Ports on the Switches and SSH Login User Information (Applicable to CE6855-48S6Q-HI switches).

      Data switch 0 Password

      Password used to log in to data switch 0 through SSH.

      Data switch 0 SSH Port

      Port used to log in to data switch 0 through SSH. The default port is port 22.

      Data switch 1 Management IP Address

      IP address of the management network port on data switch 1.

      Data switch 1 Username

      User name used to log in to data switch 1 through SSH. For details about the user name, see (Optional) Configuring New IP Addresses for the Management Network Ports on the Switches and SSH Login User Information (Applicable to CE6855-48S6Q-HI switches).

      Data switch 1 Password

      Password used to log in to data switch 1 through SSH.

      Data switch 1 SSH Port

      Port used to log in to data switch 1 through SSH. The default port is port 22.

      NOTE:

      To configure switches without using SmartKit, close the window. For details about manually configuring switches, see (Optional) Manually Configuring Switches.

      After configuring the data switch, the Confirm Networking Environment page is displayed.

    6. Read and confirm the displayed message.

      Select I have powered on the controller to be expanded and can click Next to verify the controller node and click Next.

      The Obtain Node Information page is displayed.

    7. The system automatically obtains the node information.

      After the node information has been obtained, click Next.

      The Confirm Expansion Controller Information page is displayed.

    8. Based on Controller enclosure SN, confirm the controller information and set Whether to add to Yes.

      After confirmation, select I have read the previous information and understood consequences of the operation and click Next.

      The Plan Internal Base IP Address page is displayed.

    9. Plan the internal base IP addresses.
      Enter the planned internal base IP addresses and select I have confirmed that the planned IP addresses will not conflict with other IP addresses. Then click Next.
      NOTE:
      • Internal IP addresses are allocated to the original cluster and controllers to be added for internal communication.
      • For V500R007C20 and earlier versions, the internal IP addresses must fall within the 172.17.*.1 and 10.253.*.1 network segments, where * ranges from 0 to 238. V500R007C30 does not have this restriction on the internal IP addresses, but the 172.17.*.1 and 10.253.*.1 network segments are recommended.
      • If an IP address conflict occurs, contact Huawei technical support.

      The Danger dialog box is displayed.

      Confirm the information in the dialog box and select I have read and understand the consequences associated with performing this operation. Then click OK.

      The Check Network Connectivity page is displayed.

    10. The system automatically checks the network connection.

      If the network connection check fails, reconnect the network and click Recheck.

      After the check passes, click Next.

      The Pre-expansion Check page is displayed.

    11. The system automatically performs pre-expansion check.

      If the check fails, identify and rectify the failed items. Then click Recheck to perform the check again.

      After all check items are passed, click Next.

      The Capacity Expansion page is displayed.

    12. The system automatically starts adding controllers.
      NOTE:

      A Danger dialog box will be displayed, indicating that this operation will restore the new controllers to the default settings.

      Confirm the information in the dialog box and select I have read and understand the consequences associated with performing this operation. Then click OK. The system continues to add controllers.

      The Capacity Expansion page is displayed and controller expansion is automatically performed. If controller expansion fails, take recommended actions in Expansion Rollback (Applicable to V500R007C00) and Expansion Rollback (Applicable to V500R007C10 and Later) to rectify the fault.

      After the controllers are successfully added, click Next.

      The Post-expansion Check page is displayed.

    13. The system automatically performs the post-expansion check.

      If the check fails, identify and rectify the failed items. Then click Recheck to perform the check again. If the verification fails, check the No pass items and click Recheck. If the verification result still contains No pass items, rectify faults according to the instructions in Expansion Rollback (Applicable to V500R007C00) and Expansion Rollback (Applicable to V500R007C10 and Later).

      After all check items are passed, click Next.

      The Completed page is displayed.

    14. You have finished capacity expansion.

      Click Finish to complete the expansion.

  10. Check the health status and running status of the added controllers and the disk enclosure.

    Log in to OceanStor DeviceManager and check whether Health Status of the new controllers and disk enclosure is Normal and Running Status is Online.

    • If yes, the capacity expansion is successful.
    • If no, contact Huawei technical support.
