Introduction to Labels

Introduction to Labels

This section describes the materials, types, and structures of labels. It also describes the requirements on label printing and handwriting, attaching methods, label contents, and precautions.

Material Specification

The material features of the labels are as follows:

  • Thickness: 0.09 mm (0.03546 in.).
  • Color: chalk white.
  • Material: Polyester (PET).
  • Allowable temperature: -29°C to +149°C (-20.2°F to 300.2°F)
  • The labels can be printed on by a laser printer or written with an oil marker.
  • The material must pass the authentication of Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and Canadian Standards Association (CSA).

There are two types of cable labels: one is for power cables and the other is for signal cables.

Label for the Signal Cable

The label for a signal cable is L-shaped and of a fixed size. Figure F-1 shows a label for a signal cable.

Figure F-1 Label for a signal cable

The dividing lines on the label make the position of a cable clearer. For example, there is a dividing line between the cabinet number and the enclosure number, and another between the enclosure number and the slot number. The size of the dividing line is 1.5 mm x 0.6 mm (0.0591 in. x 0.02364 in.), and its color is PANTONE 656c (light blue).

The dotted lines mark the position for folding the label when you attach it to the cable.

There is a mark "TO:" (upside down in the figure) at the lower right corner of the label. Write information about the peer end of the cable, to which the label is affixed after the mark.

Label for a Power Cable

The label for a power cable is attached to the identification plate on a cable tie. The size of the bulge around the identification plate is 0.2 mm x 0.6 mm (0.00788 in. x 0.02364 in.) and is symmetric on both sides. The label is attached to the center of the plate, as shown in Figure F-2.
