(Optional) Installing 3.5-Inch Disks (Applicable to 5000 and 6000 Series)

(Optional) Installing 3.5-Inch Disks (Applicable to 5000 and 6000 Series)

If disks have not been installed into the storage devices, install the disks before installing the storage devices. If disks have been installed into the storage devices, skip this procedure.

Prerequisites

The required installation tools include:

  • ESD wrist strap
  • ESD clothes
  • ESD gloves
  • (Optional) Caution labels for the coffer disks (Required only when the caution labels have not been attached to the coffer disks.)

Make sure that disks have been inserted into all coffer disk slots; otherwise, the storage system may fail to start.

Context

Disk modules are installed in the following rules:

  • Coffer disks must be configured in slot 0 to slot 3. Their types and capacities must be the same, and caution labels must be attached to them. The recommended priority for choosing the type of coffer disks is SSD > SAS > NL-SAS.
  • Non-coffer disks are installed from slot 4. The recommended sequence of installing non-coffer disks by type is SSD > SAS> NL-SAS.
    • When disk modules are of the same type but different capacities, you are advised to install those with smaller capacities in first slots.
    • When disk modules are of the same type and capacity, you are advised to install those with smaller rotating speeds in first slots.

Precautions

Disks in a storage system cannot be used by a storage system of a different model. Third-party disks that are not certified by Huawei cannot be used either. Only disks that match the model of the storage system can be used.

Procedure

  1. Wear an ESD wrist strap, ESD gloves, and ESD clothes.
  2. Take a disk out of an ESD bag.

Before inserting a disk into a disk slot, completely open the handle of the disk (stretch the handle of the disk to the maximum angle); otherwise, the disk may fail to be fully inserted into the disk slot.

  3. Insert disks into empty slots by the slot number sequence and close the handle after the disk clicks into place, as shown in Figure 5-9.

Disk slots of controller enclosures are numbered 0 to 11 from left to right and from top to bottom, as shown in Figure 5-7.

Disk slots of disk enclosures are numbered 0 to 23 from left to right and from top to bottom, as shown in Figure 5-8.

  4. (Optional) Attach the caution labels to the coffer disks.

    NOTE:

If the caution labels have been attached to the coffer disks, skip this step.

Figure 5-10 shows the locations of the caution labels attached to 3.5-inch coffer disks.

Follow-up Procedure

After the installation is complete, install filler panels to the vacant slots to ensure proper heat dissipation. For details about installation methods, see this section.
