This document is applicable to OceanStor 5110 V5, 5110F V5, 5300 V5, 5300F V5, 5500 V5, 5500F V5, 5600 V5, 5600F V5, 5800 V5, 5800F V5, 6800 V5, and 6800F V5 storage systems. It describes hardware installation of those storage systems for helping you easily and quickly finish the installation.

Connecting GE/10GE Electrical Ports

Connect GE/10GE electrical ports on a controller enclosure to ports on an application server through network cables so that service channels are set up for data exchange between the storage device and the application server.

Prerequisites

The required installation tools and materials include:

  • Network cables
  • Cable ties
  • Diagonal pliers

Context

  • If the rate of a GE electrical port is set to 1000 Mbit/s, the port does not support the half-duplex mode.
  • If GE electrical ports or the network ports on an application server (or a switch) are not in autonegotiation mode, the controller enclosure and the application server must be connected through crossover cables. Otherwise, they may not be able to communicate with each other.

To improve system reliability, read and comply with the following rules:

  • 2 U controller enclosure and 3 U controller enclosure:
    • In the same storage system, the Ethernet port connection is symmetrical between controller A and controller B. That is, the interface modules of the two controllers reside in slots with the same slot ID and use the ports in the same positions.
    • In the port binding scenario, the member bond ports of controller A and controller B are symmetrical in the same storage system. That is, the interface modules of the two controllers reside in slots with the same slot ID and use the ports in the same positions.
  • 6 U controller enclosure:
    • Only supports the switch-based network. In the same storage system, the Ethernet port connection is symmetrical between controllers A and B or between controllers C and D. That is, the interface modules of the two controllers reside in slots with the same slot ID and use the ports in the same positions.
    • In the port binding scenario, the member bond ports of controllers A and B or of controllers C and D are symmetrical in the same storage system. That is, the interface modules of the two controllers reside in slots with the same slot ID and use the ports in the same positions.

A storage device can be connected to an application server in either of two ways:

NOTE:
  • GE electrical ports employ CAT5 network cables or CAT6A shielded network cables. 10GE electrical ports employ 1 m to 3 m CAT6A shielded network cables.
  • The connection method of 10GE electrical ports is the same as that of GE electrical ports. The following figures use how to connect a GE electrical port to an application server as an example.

NOTE:

In the preceding example, four redundant links connect to two controllers of a 6 U controller enclosure. Connecting to four controllers is similar, that is, each controller connects to each switch.

Before setting up connections through Ethernet switches, you are advised to prepare the following:

  • Plan switch network segments and allocate switch ports to each network segment.
  • The first and last ports on a switch are typically used to connect to other switches.

The following procedure uses GE electrical ports as an example to describe how to set up connections between a storage device and an application server.

Procedure

  1. Connect one end of a network cable to a GE electrical port.
  2. Set up a connection to a network port on the application server.

    • Direct connection: Connect the other end of the network cable to a network port on the application server.
    • Switch-based connection: Connect the other end of the network cable to a switch. Then connect the switch to the application server through a network cable.

  3. Repeat Step 1 to Step 2 to connect other GE electrical ports to the application server.
  4. Lay out and bind the network cables.

    NOTE:
